Move Hard Drive from Lucid to Hardy

I've got a hard drive that has had lucid 10.04 installed on it. I'd like to move it to another PC and load Hardy 8.04 on it. I've set up the usual three partitions (ext3) with Gparted but when I run the Kubuntu Hardy install disk (32 bit) all I get is a "initramfs" message and no install. There are no other error messages.

I'm surprised that the (K)ubuntu install disks don't simply erase what is on a hard drive and then reformat/partition as necssary but they don't seem to. Hard drive is Seagate serial 1 Tb. MB is late model standard Intel with Nvidia video.

Any insights as to what is going on and how I can get the reused H.D. to accept Hardy would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Most would simply complete the HD preparation using GParted and formatting the partitions. The installation of Hardy should then go without a hitch.

Although you weren't real specific about the point in time/process where the message appears, I think the "initramfs" error has to do with the new computer booting the installation CD, and nothing to do with the hard drive.

Take a look at FAQ #1 in the "Top 20" link in my signature, and make sure you followed the process for making a good CD.

If it is indeed the hard drive, then I would advise starting with "dd" to nuke the partition table, and then partition it again (I used a Parted Magic Live CD for that), and then maybe try making a Kubuntu Alternate Install CD, and try installing from that one.
