    Ubuntu to Kubuntu

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu Lucid and want to
switch to Kubuntu. (because of the use
    of mono in gnome.)

Is there any easy way to do this without
    having to reformat my hard-drive?

    Install kubuntu-desktop

This won't remove any of the Gnome / mono stuff, but will allow you to choose to boot into the Kubuntu Desktop from the GDM Login screen.

To remove the Gnome/Mono stuff have a look at http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekde

You don't really need to remove all of ubuntu to get rid of mono.
Just remove mono-runtime and libmono* (Don't worry about ubuntu-mono, it's an icon theme, not M$) It may take out several packages with it; check the list of what it's removing, but you probably don't want them.

You can also sudo apt-get install kdm. If it doesn't bring up a screen asking you to choose a default login manager, you can sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, which will bring up a screen where you can select kdm as your login manager.

The problem with running kde on top of gdm is it won't let you shut down your system from within kde. Using kdm will make kde fully functional.

          Thanks for everyones suggestions.

The first thing I did meant I was already using the kdm X login.
Now I have removed the mono stuff and it Certainly suits me not to remove all of Ubuntu.

The only reason I switched to gnome years ago (Mandriva) was I had too
many problems with kde at the time (Mainly with dial up modems) even though
I would have preferred to use KDE. It is all different now of course
and the mono thing has spurred me to change back to KDE.
