Is Kubuntu used on the Island of Madeira?

I ask this as I am on holiday there from 17th May for a week (my first time there). If I like it, I will go back there for a longer holiday, as I do to Spain, Crete and other places I've been to and liked.

Its great when you can talk to the locals either using their language or your own (providing they can speak English too) - some people can't speak English because they are either too young or too old .

I wear a Kubuntu Tee-shirt and baseball cap - often 8) and am pleased when someone stops me and asks "What is 'Kubuntu'? then I tell them that its an alternative computer operating system that's free and much better than Windows could ever be... in some cases I've been invited to dual-boot my copy of Kubuntu (currently Karmic Koala 9.10), and quite often am told later that that person has gone over to KK 9.10 permanently - which is cool!

    That's a nice story

I live in the other Portuguese archipelago called Açores (often called Azores in English). Might not be easy to find someone in the street who knows about Linux, but the awareness is surely growing. A couple of years ago the government start a initiative called "e-escolinha" and another called "e-escola". The e-escolinha initiative provided a netbook called "Magalhães" for younger students, at the price of 50€ and depending on the financial situation of the family it can get a discount or even be free. This netbook came by default with a dual-boot of Windows XP Pro and Linux Caixa Mágica (a Portuguese distribution based on Mandriva). Since every kid should have one, the parents should at least wonder what is that other entry on the boot menu (XP is the default entry by default). The other initiative called e-escola for older students has really good notebook computers for 150€ each with the same discount as e-escolinha for families with less financial capabilities (there is a certain variety of models to choose, but only one allowed per person), but for 3 years the person has to keep paying 5€ per month to the broadband ISP. The best notebook model has two versions (same hardware), one cames with Windows 7 and Office 2007 and the other comes with Linux Caixa Mágica and OpenOffice in Portuguese.

What I mean with all this, is that all Portuguese students should at least hear about Linux, and the fact is there is a lot of people who uses Linux in Portugal, many people who contribute to Linux in Portugal, and the major and serious Portuguese Forums have a GNU/Linux section. In sum, I personally think Linux can only keep growing. Even here (Azores), in these Islands in the middle of the Atlantic, I already see stores selling Mac computers. The Portuguese Ministry of Justice uses a special version of Linux Caixa Mágica called "Linius CM". I think Linux is great, and much more people keep coming to the same conclusion.

Re: Is Kubuntu used on the Island of Madeira?

My daughter often goes to the Canary Islands, notably, Gran Canaria, every year and she said that the schools there have adopted Kubuntu because of its easy accessibility. She also said that Kubuntu is very well thought of and hold it in high esteem.

I suppose it is only a matter of time before Madeira catches up with everyone else as being an island, it probably misses out on a lot of things that happen in Mainland Portugal. I will be staying in Funchal (which has been described as Little Lisbon) in the Santa Maria Hotel on Rua Santa Maria - which I understand is the oldest Rua in Madeira, having been set out in 1430AD. I'm not well up on the Portugueese language, but it will be fun learning it whilst I am there. I intend to sample a lot of the food, especially the Scabbard Fish and crustaceans that come in via the Fishing Boats.

Thank You, Zhao, for your comments, they are very much appreciated. At home here in Northumberland, England I do a lot of Gardening which was a spin-off from when I worked for the Forestry Commission in England.

Would be great if all schools everywhere in the world approached Linux, after all is free software so everyone can use everywhere without restrictions and also offers the best security as well as a panoply of high quality free software. It's really great.

Have a nice holiday terabyte , nice hearing your thoughts

Sorry about the problems with the latest update of Kubuntu, it looks like malformed commands by Udev and Grub2 is not responding well... sigh back to the drawing board. Mine's working but then I've not charged in and tried everything - yet!
