    Hang during shutdown

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. But when I shutdown my computer from the terminal, it goes to the kubuntu shutdown screen and hangs. This has also happened with ubuntu on my other computers (PPC and x86). Anyone else get this? Or do I just have bad luck?

    Re: Hang during shutdown

I experienced this on prior releases prior to 9.04 - running Karmic 9.10 now as main OS. It isn't a hang, rather, you aren't getting a power off action - just the OS being shutdown.

Okay, I guess that makes sense. I read the man page on shutdown, didn't seem to help with shutting down the actual computer, any tips?

        Re: Hang during shutdown

        Sorry for the belated reply.

Start a konsole (or yakuake) and enter the following command:
        Code:
        sudo shutdown -P
You will be asked to enter your password> Do so. The machine will be powered down in an orderly manner. All the data that you have saved to disk will be saved, but anything in RAM that you have not saved will be lost.

I'm experiencing the same problem; but what's the point of running a desktop environment if even a simple thing as shutting down my pc needs a console?
How do I get proper shutdown function for the assigned desktop buttons??
Also I'm having a problem with loosing my widgets on any unclean shutdown, which happens quite often as kubuntu still freezes on multiple occassions..
Furthermore Kubuntu keeps setting back my display size and width with every reboot, how can I keep these settings?

          kind regards!

            @rijkswaanvijand:
            (0) Unfortunately, you do not have the same problem as the original post.
But when I shutdown my computer from the terminal (emphasis added), it goes to the kubuntu shutdown screen and hangs.
Note the phrase "from the terminal".

            (1) Most people find that the point of running a desktop is convenience. For example, they like to click an icon on the desktop, rather than using a console app to perform the same function. The shutdown icon works for most people. It just doesn't work for you because of a (yet to be determined) problem.

            (2) We need more information to determine why you are unable to shut down your computer from the GUI. Please see the instructions on the home page of this forum regarding how to ask an effective question.

            (3) The other issues that you cite seem to indicate that you have a significant problem. I would suggest that you start a thread in the "Help the New Guy" forum, describing YOUR shut down problem in detail.
