Why does Flash heat up my CPU?

I've kept my flash up-to-date. I have a 3.2GHz PIV with 1GB of RAM. Numerous case fans. Why do Flash applications (i.e. Hulu, Youtube) heat my CPU to dangerous temps (50-55 C)?

Is it the general opinion of the linux community to just suck it up and take what Adobe gives us? Trust me, I'm not a developer capable of creating something better than Flash but jeez! Choppy fullscreen playback, intensive system load. This stuff is crap!

    END VENT. thanks for listening.

Description: free SWF movie player - standalone player for KDE
Gnash is a free SWF movie player, which works either standalone, or as
plugin for Firefox/Mozilla or Konqueror. Currently it is in a alpha state.
The plugins are under heavy development at this time.
    .
Gnash supports the majority of Flash opcodes up to SWF version 7, and
a wide sampling of ActionScript classes for SWF version 8.5. All the
core ones are implemented, and many of the newer ones work, but may be
    missing some of their methods.
    .
Included in the Gnash is an XML based messaging system, as specified in
the Flash specification. This lets a flash movie communicate over a TCP/IP
socket, and parse the incoming XML message. This lets a movie be a remote
control for other devices or applications.
    .
Klash is a free standalone SWF movie player for KDE.

      Don't worry, 55 C is not a problem. Above 70 is a problem.

My x6800, overclocked to 3.45GHz, never ever falls below 46 degrees. It turned 3 years old last October.

QFT. If you are worried about it then you could invest in an aftermarket CPU cooler kit.

Unfortunately for all of us, flashvideo somehow became the de facto standard for streaming video. Just thank your lucky stars that it wasn't Realvideo *shudder*.

There are always plenty of alternatives to RealPlayer... just look at what my public radio offers:

Although the OT was a bit of a vent/rant on flash in general, I would like to say that just blowing out your case and fans can make a heck of a difference for temp performance under load... my cpu would idle at about 35 which didn't seem that bad, but if I were to reformat some video it would go to the upper 70's... I cleaned it out and the idle temp didn't change very much at all, but the high load temp was reduced to mid 40's, maybe 50.

Top tip - I experience the same sort of temps on my T41 - watching footy in the browser it shoots up to 70+. Will try and give it a good clean

Re: Why does Flash heat up my CPU?

Yeah, I'm aware that 55C is not life-threatening. Still! Intel specs for the prescott chip recommends sustained temperatures at no higher than 53C.

Don't get me wrong, I'm eternally grateful to the OS community for developing what they have for linux Flash. I just wish it didn't have to be this way (i.e. anything worth watching on the 'net is Flash-based). I'll try gnash again. It's been awhile since I gave it attention and configuration. I understand it's come a long way.

                  Still irritated. . . . >
