translating with launchpad

I followed the links on how to help to the launchpad site, and went to the translate section, picked a document in the kubuntu document section, which had no name assigned to it, and was fairly big.
I started writing, and everyhting winded up in suggestions.

So my question is:
can someone explain the launchpad process in a nutshell?

I'd like to help translating.

nutshell: your translations need to be reviewed by a head translator before being put into Kubuntu.
