Amazon Kindle App for PC under wine

I have been using the Kindle App on my iPhone for quite a while now. It is very handy to have when waiting in doctors offices or some other period of random waiting.

I decided to try the new app for PC today under wine. It works! I can't read any of the tool bar text, since it is either set to be transparent or the same color as the button. The book text though is very readable, and the app is rather light. It loads quickly and works very nice.

Not sure what I need to configure to get the tool bar text to display correctly.

Re: Amazon Kindle App for PC under wine

I set "Windows Version" to "Windows 98" and fonts did show up nicely.

But, after defeating this, expect one more problem: you can buy books, but you can't view them correctly:
KindleForPC downloads the book file to temp folder and then tries to write it to 'home' folder somewhere in the system (folder named My Kindle Content, Kindle Content or so).
It fails, because for some reason no folder with that name is created after KindleForPC install.
Creating such folder in KFPC working dir, wine user profile dir, wine My Documents dir didn't work.

Also, there's now way I could find to decrypt actually downloaded files: to do so using MobiDeDRM, you need your kindle serial, which is also highly encrypted in Kindle for PC (i assume the file containing it, lays in Local Settings/Application Data/Amazon/Kindle For PC/{some gibberish} folder)

So, if anyone managed to overcome all this crap, please help

Thanks. Changing the wine settings to Win98 did the trick. I have not purchased any books through the app for PC. The ones I purchased from my iPhone display correctly.

        Glad I could help.
You say, that you actually can read these books bought from iPhone, on your PC?
Can you please locate and tell where are the books stored locally?
        Somewhere in ~/.wine, I guess?

I have a new folder in my home directory named "My Kindle Content". There are two files in there "B002PEP4BO_EBOK.mbp & B002PEP4BO_EBOK.prc".

Re: Amazon Kindle App for PC under wine

kjjjjshab, no luck with that article. seems that I'm the only person having this issue under wine?

So I created "My Kindle Content" in home, put there the only .prc file I found in temp dir.
              That failed, too.

monte48lowes, can you tell what distro and wine version do you use?

This is an ancient thread but I thought that I'd post that KindleforPC works with absolutely no setup under Tahr.

When the downloaded .exe is clicked Wine opens and it installs Kindle.

After providing your e-mail addy and password Kindle opens and syncs the books that have been purchased or downloaded.

The same goes for an Android cell phone and a tablet such as my MY|Eeebo.

Bookarks are synced across all devices etc.

As an added value last year Google now provides a $2.99 "matchbook" download if one purchases the physical copy from Amazon.

However the "matchbook" is not immediately available, it takes maybe fifteen minutes for the "matchbook" to appear as a purchase at the Amazon site.
