GreyGeek , i like that. we are completely bleeding edge here, and should remain so. i for one enjoy the bug hunt, there are only a few months (nov,may& maybe dec, june) that i don't have an alpha or beta on this machine for testing and in between those there is almost always a kde release for testing.

The fact that Kubuntu has people like you guys makes it an amazing distro!

However, you guys are the avant-garde: you think at your machine in a very different way than the normal Kubuntu user and the potential Kubuntu user.

My point is finding a way to transform the potential user into an actual user. In other words, think of someone that:

-Uses its machine for production most of the time
-Does not like finding bugs
-Has never tried Kubuntu (or kde, or linux)
-Is open minded and willing to try new things

and think of having just one sentence to convince him to give Kubuntu a try. What would it be? And remember that we don't want to lie to people: "Kubuntu: the most stable and reliable OS ever", "Kubuntu: twice as much power as any other OS", "Kubuntu: makes great coffee" are not allowed.

"Kubuntu: the bleeding edge"? mmm... honestly, I don't think it is a good idea: it would not appeal to many people, and it is not really true either. One can live a happy life sticking with the default packages without installing the experimental repo, or trying the alphas and betas. So Kubuntu is equal to bleeding edge only if you want it to be. But then, again, the point is more about leaving the user the choice.

i support about a dozen of those "regular" users running kubuntu, most find that once you get past the program names being different they tend to putt right along using kubuntu. my gf is a great example of our "regular" users, she just wants a machine to work so she can get her things done on it and go on with her day, and most of the "regular" users are like that just make this work so i can do my stuff. over the next few days i will try to get in touch with them all and ask where we can improve this for new users and for those "regular" users.

This is the #1 comment the dozen or so folks make, who now run Kubuntu after I used it to replace Windows on their boxes. It was a minor hurdle. All are mousers anyway and once they knew the names of apps which were similar in Kubuntu they clicked on.

WE became Dolphin
IE became FireFox.
Exchange became Thunderbird
Word became OpenOffice
Add/Remove became Synaptic
Control Center became Systemsettings
Trash became Trash
Notepade became KWrite
DOS became Konsole.
Click is still Click

Simple. Even a caveman can do it.

Packaging Flaws

"Another issue that seams to pop up is that some KDE modules are no compiled with all the functionality they are capable of. This is usually due to the fact that this functionality may required packages that have not been reviewed and approved by the Ubuntu security team. These tend to be forgotten about too easily."

whats the deal with that. so if its optional for Gnome they check it but if its optional for KDE they tend to forget about it. that right there is prolly the cause of most of the packaging flaws.
This is unacceptable and perhaps we need our own small kubuntu security team to work with them and focus on these packages along with others related to kubuntu.

Software/Bug Reports
as i said eariler the bugs related to kde must be sent to kde via there bug reporter, our bugs naturally we need to fix. then again there is always the issue of getting the useful bugs and
for this can't we just add a var to tell it what bug reporter to open. use a simple hook in the os to provide this feature. it should be easier to install (in mass) the dbg packages for whats installed now.

the "regular" user don't know that they will need to install optional debuging packages in order to provide anyone with a useful bug report.

the "avant-garde" user knows they need dbg packages installed in order to get out a useful report, and when testing there are required. but some times we forget about one of two.

with an option that can be set in the package manager to auto fetch a packages -dbg package when installing a package. this along with a get currently missing -dbg feature and the option to install -dbg's in the installer we can insure that bug reports will be more useful and help to speed up the entire debug process. the prompt one the installer would be "Ensure Useful Bug Report" with and explanation that in the event of crash (either system or program) your submitted bug report will be useful to kubuntu devlopers), or something to that effect.

I think the idea of Kubuntu being customizable is good. You choose what applications you want or don't want.
You choose you desktop, whether you want sounds, what sound, ...
You choose the desktop effects, the colors, even the spelling, not to mention the 25,000 ++ packages
and the ability to access many more

Kubuntu - it fits, or
Kubuntu - Kustom fit, or
Kubuntu - change it according to your mood, or
Kubuntu - for kids of all ages from zero upwards

just to provoke more ideas.

glad to see some more people proposing ideas!

However, a sentence is good or bad depending on the message we want to send. I think finding the right sentence should be a three step process. Can you guys try to answer these questions?

-what makes Kubuntu different than Ubuntu?
-what makes Kubuntu different that other KDE distro?

-What is the target-user? (given the answers to the two questions above,
someone that likely to enjoy Kubuntu more than Ubuntu and any other distro).

-how would you describe Kubuntu in one sentence? (thinking that your audience
is the person described above)

maybe we can collect a bunch of them and then see if there is some sort of agreement.

It uses KDE instead of Gnome and KDE is more intuitive in its interface and more familiar to people migrating from windoze than Gnome, and (what's more) it doesn't have an ugly color scheme!

It's based on the Debian system with the largest community of software developers in the world with the added advantage (over Debian) that it is updated regularly.

Someone who wants a system that easy to use, up-to-date, and MUCH more secure than windoze

Three short sentences. Kubuntu is easy to learn and to use. It looks good. It's secure and state-of-the art.

However, we really aren't in competition with Ubuntu any more than KDE is in competition with Gnome. The wonderful thing about Linux is CHOICE. You're not locked in to anything except the kernel (and if you don't like that, you can use a BSD distro).
