Most repositories appear to be down or VERY SLOW!

I got a notification on my Karmic installation this morning that 2 updates were waiting. I let KPackageKit do its thing. It died with a timeout msg, after stating that 41 packages were waiting...

I opened a console and issued "sudo apt-get update". MOST of the repositories replied with "HIT" or "IGN" before one would time out. us.archive.ubuntu.com hangs for quite a while before passing on with a "HIT" label. Good retrieves of headers result in a "GET:n http://....." message.

I've got a 10Mb/sec bandwidth connection and the dl speeds often hover around 50kb/s or lower, thus resulting in timeout errors.

I have tried more than a dozen times to get a clean update of my cache, but to no avail. Here's the result of the latest try:

I attempted an upgrade but it aborted after failing to retrieve several of the 41 packages which were ready for download.

Is it me, my particular segment of the internet (which shows a 4% packet loss on the Internet health board right now) or is everyone having similar problems?

Same here. Although I am still running Jaunty

There was a 68.5MB update to OOo3 (16 packages) that took ages to download. Perhaps everybody is thrashing the us.archive.ubuntu.com server

I did this from a consistantly upgraded KK since Alph4 :
      Code:
      $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
      No problem here

      prefix "ch"
HP Pavilion dv6 core i7 (Main)
      4 GB Ram
      Kubuntu 18.10

Ah, it seems like the new karmic beta release is the reason for the slowness. That, and it appears that some branches of the Internet are faster than others right now.

The Canadian branches were slow this morning for me and updating timed out a few times. They are still pretty slow as of this post.

Have you tried letting Synaptic search out a better Server?

Synaptic>Settings>Repositories>Ubuntu Software Tab>Change Download from Other>Select Best Server

NOTE that this changes quite often and you can always change the Server back a bit later.

What Ubuntu Software Tab? I don't see one in Synaptic. I can change the server but there is no reference to Ubuntu. It's running on the average of 22kbps. Super ssssslllloooooowwwww!

Well, something happened and now it's back up to 227kbps. All's well in the Ubuntu world again.

That's a changing condition. I tried arochester's tip to find the best server at ~1530 Eastern US time and Synaptic hung up on a unresponsive server in Brazil(?!). That said, I downloaded some stuff earlier today (~8AM) from "server for the United States" and I didn't notice any excessive time delay.

My normal procedure is to do my updates at around 1-2AM eastern time. The US servers aren't too active then.

I didn't do this update yet, but the ones I have done in the past have been around 80kbps. All my downloads, regardless of where from, seem to come in the 80 to 120kbps range. I used a stopwatch to double check and insure that there was not some artifact of the download manager. I have a pretty regular 1.5Gbps connection which I check frequently on speedtest.com. I wonder where the limits on download speed are set. How does Kubuntu divide up the incoming data streams?

I've had a miserable time trying download the Beta version of the netbook remix. AFAIK, the Kubuntu folder is still 29 SEP. The Ubuntu one is 30 SEP, but after a 4-hour download (via broadband) it reported "a file could not be read" and the image was defective.

1.5Gbps? I pay $72US/mon for a guaranteed 10Mbps connection with NO cap on downloads. My max download speed is 1.7Mbps.

How much does your connection cost you, where do you live, and do they allow immigrants from the US?

lol! Sorry! 1.5Mbps of course. I pay CDN$39.15 per month for 1.5Mbps wireless. The wireless connection is very reliable, but the actual ISP goes down for an hour (or even a day) once in a while. According to speedtest.net the Canadian average is about the same as the global average, and that is 5.7Mbps. Basically, I would say that internet is expensive here. Still, I don't think that the ISP connection speed has anything to do with download speed as long as it is over something around 200Kbps.

I donno. Before my 10Mb/s connection I had a 7Mb/sec RR connection that was dropped to 3.5Mb/sec due to RR bungling, so I switched to EarthLink. With 3.5Mb/s RR I could never get over 300Mb/s dl speed. Theoretically one should be able to get around 85% of ideal bandwidth so my browsing speed should be around 850Kb/s and my DL speed should be twice that. I usually get it by using a DL accelerator like filezilla or aria2c, which gives me a reliable 1.7Mb/s on fast sites.
