Where to post Howto's etc?

Hi,
I think this was bound to happen, the ubuntu success is fenominal and the seperation of the forum is normally called growth progress! It seems as if a lot of the ubuntu supporters are a bit aprehensive about this, but reading between the lines they may be mostly Gnome diehards and I am of the belief that KDE will be the GUI of choice in the foreseeable future! Anyway good luck ahead, as this is still part of Ubuntu even if seperate.

Can you let us know the plans for hosting or storing documentation, such as existing howto's, wiki's etc. These are the things mostly sought by the users and it will otherwise take quite a while before the forum has a significant amount of posts with good information. It would be a bad idea to duplicate the same documentation and it would not be a good idea to depend on new posts, so some sort of linking needs to be done. This will eventually make or break this forum.

Personally I learnt some things the hard way, there is quite a difference between ubuntu and kubuntu and then again between an ubuntu or a kubuntu only, installation or a shared kubuntu/ubuntu installation. So if some guide for kubuntu works it may be for a shared installation and does not work on a clean kubuntu only or ubuntu. The menus become a mess but some Gnome programs run very successfuly in a shared installation.
What I am saying is that any guides should say if it is for a kubuntu only or a shared installation as many at present refer to "ubuntu" even if meant for kubuntu only. Most of the guides provided by the 'geeks" are for Gnome (although they do not always state this) as they are not such great KDE users themselves it seems.
Good luck forward
Matchless
Regards
Matchless

Proudly kubuntu!

Ubuntu and Kubuntu are more or less the same, just diffrent DM's. If you remove the default DM (Gnome) in Fedora and install Kde instead, it still is Fedora.

No it's not only Gnome supporters that are (how did you put it), aprehensive about this separation, I can understand why this is happening cause we only have one section totally devoted to the Kde version of this distro (even though there is several independent sections to). I hope that this forum and ubuntuforums will work together in the future, otherwise this is just a waste of resources and time. Why not just make a section with KDE and one for Gnome, with some subsections and the rest independent sections, that way it wouldn't feel as bloated.

I think that the siteadmin here at kubuntuforum has some great ideas and it's certainly runs much faster for me then ubuntuforums, if they all would put their smart brains together, I think they would be able to make a great forum even greater
When you make your mark in the world, watch out for guys with erasers.

Hey, I personally don't really see why there's any apprehension at all, from either die-hard Gnome or KDE users. I have both forums bookmarked side by side on my personal toolbar folder. One site (Ubuntu) has a greater archive of posts for me to peruse (and learn from) while the other (this one) may have newer posts/questions that I need answered.

They are, after all, distributed on 2 different discs, so why not a dedicated forum to each? As far as I'm concerned, I don't mind gettin' my learnin' from 2 different sources. More to browse through, sure, but also more of a chance to learn about both systems... It's nice having a dedicated KDE forum, and it's also nice having a primarily Gnome forum to read through, just in case I decide to try Gnome as well.

But for those who don't want Gnome, (or who don't like the colour scheme, I mean, c'mon, it's boring brown of all things!) or are new to learning just KDE, this place is perfect for that. A newbie may just well be saying "BUT, I have KUBUNTU, not Ubuntu... " This forum gives them an.. isolated isn't the word I want to use... no.. a place Dedicated to the display system/distro of choice for them to learn from.

So both forums, side by side, are a great resource. Even though I don't use Gnome, yet, I doubt it is going to go away. Gnome users don't have to come here if they don't want to, but this place could be a haven of learning for some babes-in-the-woods who don't want to get confused by subtle differences between the two systems.

Now, to download Gnome and give that a whirl... I hear it has better theme management, so I'll have to test that out.

Well. Tried Gnome. Didn't like it. Removed it from my system. Doesn't feel or look as nice as KDE.
