Details? I'm willing to try it tomorrow. The system builder was nice enough to pre-install Kubuntu Jaunty for me, though he made it clear that it is not supported by him.

You just download it from here (see the notes, you may need to install php5-cli)
      http://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/?k=downloads

Once installed, the easiest way to get started is to run against someone else's test. For instance:
      http://global.phoronix-test-suite.co...97-32256-17235

The first column is me (the Phenom X3), before overclocking. Look at the bottom of the page for instructions on how to run against that. Once you are done, you can post here the new page with the results adding your column.

This thread has revealed the absence of a crucial happy face icon --- one showing a drool

I'm not putting Windows on this computer. I'll be running XP in a VM.

I have already found that two of the buttons are duplicates of standard left-click and standart right-click. That leave four unassigned buttons for me to play with.

Weird, I see them both (btnx and -config) in Karmic. Are all the repositories enabled over there?

                      Wise choice.

XP is STILL the best OS Microsoft has ever released, which says a lot about that company's ability to create secure and stable software.

A big advantage of XP is that you get ALL of Windows capabilities. With Win7 you have "buy up" or pay for addition increments of upgrade (about 20 levels in all). If you end up with a Win7 that can do everything XP can do then you'll have paid $300+ for it.

AFAIK that is only true of XP Professional, but not of XP Home. I have run into some obscure but annoying differences with networking on XP Home.

At any rate, the plan is for the new computer to be Windows-free. I haven't needed anything from Windows in almost a year now. I only boot Windows on my current machine to run updates.

Me too, and just to do that sometimes takes my Acer's XP partition 45 minutes!

I don't know if they're still available or not -- as recently as this summer I bought Win XP Pro OEM via Internet vendor for $115 USD. Looks like it is:

                              http://pricero.com/Microsoft-Windows...source=froogle

I run Win XP Pro SP3 in a VM (VMWare Player), because I use a proprietary database that has no equivalent in Linux. Doing it that way, Windows updates are "discretionary" -- there's no overwhelming reason to do them. I don't use it for browsing or e-mail -- I'm behind a router with the default IP address changed. Three years running this way and not the first sign of a virus.

One reason why I use the Linksys WRT54GL wireless router is because it is driven by Linux and uses a Linux firewall. Running my XP partition behind that router is probably the main reason why it never gets infected, that and the fact that I never use email or browse in XP.
