synaptic not opening

In jaunaty kde 3.5 I can get synaptic to open from kmenu, it works fine from terminal and run command. I've double checked the spelling with no change. It works fine on another machine with the same set up.

Would like also to get cntrl-alt-backspace to restart X with the login in screen, I see that dontzap is installed.

Can't get no password login to work either.
Any ideas on these?

What do you have at the Kmenu ?

Have you executed the "dontzap" (command line tool to set the DontZap option in xorg.conf) ?

I have synaptic as the command in kmenu.
