    Kubuntu to Ubuntu (8.10)

    Hey guys,

I've been using Linux for a while now.
I have to say that I fell in love with the KDE desktop when I saw it for the 1st, time.
Someone in your university deliberately installed Linux on one of the machines so people would wonder what was that. (Smart idea!)

Anyways, when I heard that Ubuntu was one of the most famous distros & easy to use, I downloaded it to discover this is not the desktop that I liked, so I knew it was GNOME & that I wanted the KDE desktop environment. Nevertheless I used Ubuntu on my laptop for a while till I chose to switch to Kubuntu.

    From 7.10 to 8.04 & now migrated to 8.10.

I was very disappointed with the problems in Kubuntu 8.10 is it's still not yet "Rock Solid" since it is using KDE4. So I chose to switch to Ubuntu for now.
That's for my laptop only, still using Kubuntu 8.04 on my desktop & not planning to upgrade anytime soon.

Personally I'm so sad due to the switch, but at the same time I'm happy that the developers would have much time to focus on KDE4 at the moment. Now, I cannot wait till the 9.04 is out!

    Just felt like sharing

    Thanks for sharing that.
People have been ranting quite a bit lately and assuming that since Kubuntu 8.10 is having problems that it is just the OS itself, instead of just bugs that still need to be worked out with the DE (desktop environment).
The great thing about Linux, that people seem to forget, is that you have choices. By no means do you have to upgrade to KDE4. There are lots of other DE's out there like; Gnome, XFCE, Enlightenment..etc.
Linux is about freedom of choice.

Yes, it would appear from some of the more hostile posts that it's Kubuntu and it's devs which have - or are - the problem and ought to be towed out to sea for use as target-practice.

Such an attitude is foolish - in my opinion.

KDE 4 is still being developed, give it time.

I must admit, i'm perfectly happy with Hardy 3.5.10, and i'll probably stick with it 8) but it's good to see the innovations which Intrepid is bringing, and i'm happily settling in to use Intrepid as an alternative Desktop.

... and i'm sure that my ISP is happy with the frequent up-dates.

Well, am not hostile against it at all. I just think it needs some time to cook
8.10 has some really good improvements, that's why I've decided to give it a try.
And as I've mentioned earlier, it's good that developers are not concentrating on KDE4 only.
So am expecting an hopefully amazing distribution in April 2009.

If it seemed that i was calling your post "hostile", 0x00FE, i Apologise.

I was thinking of someone who suddenly popped up on Kubuntu Forums and immediately started slating the OS and the devs, in his initial post.

... haven't seen him lately.... i'm glad to say.

            It's ok "aged hippy",

            I get what you mean

BTW, I've miss wrote the sentence:
"And as I've mentioned earlier, it's good that developers are not concentrating on KDE4 only."

There should be no "not" before "concentrating".
So am happy that they are concentrating on KDE4 only.

            Cheers

lol I did that. Except I just used the live CD and made no permanent changes/damages so I didn't get in (as much) trouble at high school. I t was funny watching people goto the computer and be unable to use it (expecting Windoze), except one person tried to use it, they opened Firefox. It was really slow on my school computers for some reason even though they were P4.

One time I left it running on a Friday and when the tech sent a remote shutdown signal, the machine running Ubuntu didn't receive it and it was on all weekend constantly reading the CD.

running off the live cd is always a bit slower as it has to take the info from the CD drive.

I was actually trying to get my niece to do this in her comp class at school, she wouldn't do it though.

But it takes longer than another computer, even for a Live CD. It takes longer than a machine I have with a CPU that has around the same specs.

CPU is only one part of the equation though, you also have to think about the RAM, the amount of FSB, etc.
Did you try it on 2 seperate pc's at the school with the exact same specs? If it ran different on 2 pc's in the same lab, with the same specs, then I would be a little suspicious.

Could be the RAM, they had 256 MB before I got in trouble for doing it. After they got 1 GB (Two 512 MB Sticks) I never did try. I was there to replace the old memory for the tech guy to repay a few favors he did for me (like order me stuff online since I didn't have my prepaid Master Card then)

                        Re: Kubuntu to Ubuntu (8.10)

yeah, RAM plays a big part in running the live CD since everything needs to get loaded or cached somewhere.

On the Live CDs it says you need xyz MB or RAM and it doesn't say anything about anything else, like CPU. (Seems like the amount you need goes up for each version.)

KDE4 is pretty resource intensive. 8.04 with the KDE3.5 probably would run fine though.

Funny thing is my laptop runs faster with KB 8.10 than it did with KB 8.4.1 kde3.
                              Go figure.
