I've been seeing a lot of coverage around the net lately on java now being fully open sourced. Does this mean that in future distro releases it will start to be included with the initial install? What's the current word on this? Is it now possible to do so, or is there something else I've missed?

u can install java thru adept, apt-get, etc..

I'm well aware I can install java. I'm just wondering if there has been a reconsideration of the policy of not having it installed by default now that it has been fully open-sourced (something that just occoured recently)? Comments anyone?

I'd guess that Canonical would have to give the go ahead to include a truly open-source java into the distributions. My guess is that they are aware of the change to java and are/will be considering it.

(1) Has anyone tried to install the java sdk recently (i.e. since it has been fully open sourced)?
(2) If so, does it still require the user to approve a loooong license agreement before installation?

If so, it will not be installed automagically.

(3) Has anyone EVER read the license agreement?

1.)i install from the java site so prob. yes
2.)not very long - it may look short or long depending on if the console wineo is maxed or not.
3.)No not really - pretty much all licenses are the same as I see it, so no need read them all. , however i'm sure others will disagree with me on that.

(1) I meant via adept or synaptic.
(2) Looong is defined (by me) as more than paragraph of legal language.
(3) I haven't read it either, but there are people who worry about these things.

AFAIK (and feel free to correct me) the 'open sourced' java packages are openjdk-* packages (available in universe...as sun-java* packages are in multiverse).

Golly-gee! I upgraded to Hardy from Gutsy so my machine just automagically installed the new version of Sun-Java without even showing me openjdk. So now I go searching for openjdk and find that I'm already using the openjdk runtime environment (with the closed Java6 JDK). It's like learning that I already speak in prose!

Recently Openjdk6 was promoted to main; with today's upload of java-common,
OpenJDK6 is the default java runtime / development kit in main, on all
architectures...
