gnome on kubuntu versus KDE on Ubuntu

Now that there will be 2 versions of Kubuntu I have a lot of questions!
What is the difference between Kubuntu LTS with KDE3.5.9 and Ubuntu (LTS) (with an added download of KDE 3.5.9)?
    or
What's the difference between Kubuntu with KDE 4.1 (NON LTS) and Ubuntu (LTS) with an added KDE 4.1(other than there is no LTS with Kubuntu)
    and
What the difference between any of the above and
Kubuntu LTS (with KDE 3.5.9) with an added download of KDE 4.1.
There have been many comments, in the past, on various forums saying that Ubuntu users could download Kde and/or Kubuntu users could down the Ubuntu desktop and just switch between them
Please point me to a tutorial which can help me
    thanks

Re: gnome on kubuntu versus KDE on Ubuntu

There is no Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Long Term Support):

Kubuntu 8.04 will consist of two different releases, the commercially supported one featuring the stable KDE 3.5.9 desktop and a remix featuring the latest release of KDE 4.0. The following is a quick breakdown of the type of support and distributions methods which will be made available to Kubuntu 8.04:

    Kubuntu

    * Rock solid KDE 3
    * Commercial support provided by Canonical for a term of 18 months
    * Release available through ShipIt for everybody as well as downloading

    Kubuntu KDE 4 Remix

    * Cutting edge KDE 4.0
    * Support provided by the Kubuntu community via [WWW] Ubuntu Forums, Kubuntu Forums, IRC, and the [WWW] Kubuntu Users Mailing List.
    * Release available through CDs for groups who need it (ie. LoCo teams, conference teams, etc.) as well as downloading

I already have Ubuntu installed, how can I get Kubuntu?

    1. Install kubuntu-desktop either with Synaptic or the command line apt-get install.

See InstallingKDE for a full explanation.

Re: gnome on kubuntu versus KDE on Ubuntu

Thanks for the quick reply Rog131
I apologise for mixing up the "commercial supported" Kubuntu with the idea that it was an LTS version.
      However my ignorance remains.
      i.e
Suppose I download the "commercially supported" Kubuntu" and then (using synaptic) download KDE 4.1.
      or
download Ubuntu LTS then add both kde 3.5.9 and KDE 4.1
      Is this possible?
      what would be the hazards?
      thanks

      EDIT(again!)

I think that I have just found an answer on the forum:

Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron (in development) | Installation and Boot

Author Topic: Installing kde4 alongside kde3.59 (Read 254 times)
      Princey

It seems that having both KDE 3.5.9 and 4.1 is possible with, perhaps, no conflicks.
