    Compiz + ATI Radeon X1650 + Kubuntu

I am new to the Kubuntu forums, so I hope I got this posted in the right area. Has anyone been able to successfuly get compiz-fusion working with ATI drivers on Kubuntu? Mine works with the xserver-xgl installed, but it is really slow and glitchy. Is there a way to get it working otherwise with fglrx? Thanks!

Ok, well no one seems to have any answers just yet. But for anyone who is dealing with the same hair-pulling issue, I will post my own update. The answer is that it is possible (at least some say so) to get ATI drivers running through AIGLX as of a few months ago with the new ATI driver version 8.42. So, I am trying to get that working. It seems impossible at the moment, but if a miracle breaks through, I'll let you know.

Re: Compiz + ATI Radeon X1650 + Kubuntu

For anyone who stumbles across this thread and is going through the same "adventure" that I went through, here is how to solve it. First of all, I could give you a long, detailed how-to on how to get desktop effects working through compiz-fusion and fusion icon using KDE3 (the default desktop environment installed with Kubuntu 7.10). I did get it working with my ATI Radeon X1650 card that way...but I couldn't play any 3D Games or stream video while compiz-fusion was running, so I kept having to switch back to KWIN to do those tasks. In other words, if you are using KDE3 and running compiz fusion, you can't stream video and play 3D games without flashing problems. But it will work, just with issues. So the solution I found is very simple. KDE4 is now open for installation on Kubuntu 7.10. KDE 4 will alow you to enable desktop effects from the System Settings/Desktop applet. It worked right from the start for me, as long as I had my current Catalyst 8.42 driver installed for my ATI video card. Go here and install KDE 4 for smooth desktop effects on Kubuntu 7.10:
