    Format for partition

I have Kubuntu 7.10 on disk ready to install, and Partition Magic ready to make space on my HD. But Partition Magic wants me to choose between Linux 6, 7, or swap file. Which do I need, or one of each?

Mmmm -- I don't know that it is impossible to do your partitioning with Partition Magic, but as you see it is less than obvious how to do it.

I highly recommend you download and burn a GParted Live CD, from here.

I know there will be a little bit of "learning experience", but it's really not difficult -- everything is pretty intuitive. Assuming you are new to this particular endeavor (installing Linux) I recommend the ext3 filesystem, and of course you also need a swap partition which will automatically have the needed format for Linux.
