    Chat over LAN

I have used Windows and used IPMsg because I used to use winpopup in Win98 but I tried copying it to XP and there was a VBrun300.dll or something (same thing for winfile.exe ).

But since I introduced Linux in my house, I need a new way to chat.

Actually, KTalkd isn't what you want. You should already have installed Kopete.

        instant messenger for KDE

Kopete is an instant messenger program which can communicate with a variety of IM systems, such as Yahoo, ICQ, MSN, IRC and Jabber.

Kopete includes the "Now Listening" plug-in that can report what music you are currently listening to, in a number of different players, including xmms, noatun, kscd, juk, kaffeine and amarok.

Support for more IM protocols can be added through a plugin system.
If not installed, Adept Manger has it. Select and install.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Sorry, I didn't get it that you wanted a tool that would run on both platforms. It looks like xchat should do what you want. You can get the Windows version here:

            http://xchat.org/download/

and the buntu version is in the repositories and you can get it with Adept. I would suggest that you would want to either run DNS or set up a hosts file with friendly names for your machines to make it easier. I wish the really smart folks wouldn't be so quick to jump in to crap on others advice. There are plenty of posts without responses that could use their help. Good luck.

All my computers have host names, and I can VNC between them so I asuume chatting would be similar, I used IPmsg before...

If you can VNC to a host name, you should be good to go. If not, follow my previous advice. Please post back how it works for you.

XChat looks like and interent chat site, not a local LAN messenger...

                    Alright, by gum, try this:

                    http://www.akeni.com/en/product/lanmessenger.php

I should say that my family does this all time, we just use IM. I run Pidgin. Two sons run gaim, wife runs yim, daughter uses something else. It does require internet access on each of the boxes (or their cell phone clients).

                      Did you make a mistake?

It is easy to setup and does not requires a dedicated server or Internet connection.

Nope no mistake. I am telling you that I do pretty much as Snowhog suggested, just with some different clients. Kopete is a bit too dysfunctional and buggy for me. The tool that I suggested to you is different, is meant for a lan and does not require internet access. Good luck.

That's what I want, that way I own the network and dont need to make accounts, I just need to chat directly to the computer, no matter who is using it, or they even know about the chat (Ex. I need to help my mom, I can use VNC to view the screen and an app like this to tell her what to do without needing to do any setup other than installing VNC [Alredy did that] and the Chat software, and it's more private and doesnt use bandwidth!)

I used to use Linpopup to communicate with my other windows machines which worked pretty well. Been a while since I last used it myself as I have gone exclusively Linux here. It appears to be available via apt.
