tar installer program

i tried kompile and kinstaller to install the tar programs that i want. however no luck. kinstaller keep asking me if the file i pick was tar.gz -.- and kompile ask me if im super user how do i fix this and is there a better one out there? dont say do it by hand its a pain :l

You are going to be much better off if you use Adept Package Manger - you are using Kubuntu, yes - which if the package you want is available, will do the installing for you. Just because a file you download is a tar file does not mean the program is actually written for a Debian based system - Ubuntu/Kubuntu are Debian based - and if it isn't, it is almost certainly not going to run even if you do get it 'un-tarred' and compile/installed.

If a package you want is not listed in Adept, then it 1) isn't available for the release of *ubuntu you are using, 2) is in one of the non-free repositories (which you can add), or 3) isn't available as a Debian package (.deb).

"Tarballs" are merely file archives containing mostly plain source code which has to be compiled on(to) the target system - not a newbie task at all ...

Therefore, as Snowhog "said", Ubuntu's ".deb" packages are the way to go - provided they are available and work well (which, as a rule, should be the case); "real" Debian packages (read: from a Debian server), on the other hand, may or may not feel at home on an Ubuntu system.

Hummm.... I have never ever known that you should write programs for Debian. It's quite a miracle that all the stuff that I do works!!!... even worse... how in hell did I do to made programs that work both on Mandriva and *ubuntu??.

Ok, sorry, just bad jokes, I couldn't resist. But please, don't mistake programing and packaging . You usually program for linux in general (or even for unix, or crossplatform), but you package for *ubuntu or for debian, etc...

Ok, not very relevant, as the answer is right. Keep to adept if you can. Deb's after. Don't try to compile a package unless you know what is the difference between dynamic and a static link .

But usually 99'99% of the tarballs out there will compile in ubuntu (giving the correct libs and sometimes correct gcc version), and that is more than the percentage of debs that will install.

I'll take the friendly ribbing. I wasn't feeling very well, and ....

What I was trying/intending to point out, was that .deb packages, retrieved via Adept or Synaptic, are the method of choice that a new Linux initiate should use. The reference to Debian vis *ubuntu; and please (I know you will ) correct me if I'm wrong, was to point out that *ubuntu is a Debian based Linux OS and utilizes .deb packages, as apposed to Redhat packages, as apposed to ....
