    Freezing problem

    Hi everyone,

I am new to Linux and I have tried to install Kubuntu 7.04 on my computer. Seemed fine for a while but then it freezes unexpectedly. I mean it has no particular point at which it freezes. Sometimes it can be five seconds after logging in or after 30 minutes of playing a music CD, sometimes while updating the drivers/applications. I have no idea why it does that, I get no message or warning, it just stops reacting, not only to the mouse but to any command, the only thing that can be done is by forcing a reboot from the power or reset button.

I have tried to install Ubuntu 7.04, Ubuntu 6.10 and even Debian: always the same problem.

    My computer is:
ASUS P4P800-VM motherboard with Intel 2.40Ghz processor
    ATI All-in-Wonder 9700 Pro 128Mb video card
    2 Kingston 512Mb DDR 400 RAM
I have removed all the other cards from it

Any idea what is wrong or how to find out what is wrong?

    Thanks

My suspicions would begin with the RAM -- sometime when you're going to go do something else for awhile, start the memtest86 routine, and let it run for half an hour or an hour.

Next up on my list would be the video card -- if it gets into trouble, it can hang the bus and render your input devices inoperable. The computer isn't really "locked", but it might as well be, as it is uncontrollable by you. I did that once running glxgears in full screen mode.
