    Pakanto - a new cross-distribution project

I run a project dedicated to improve/write generic distribution agnostic package descriptions ready for (offline) reusage for all Linux distributions at http://pakanto.org.

    Why doing such a project?

Often software package descriptions are poor quality: If you search for functionality ("web browser") and not application names ("Konqueror") in your package manager of choice it is crucial to have non-geeky and localised package descriptions (e.g. Germans are searching for "Textverarbeitung" and not "office" or "word processor") otherwise you often will find nothing or the wrong packages.

That's what the collaborative Pakanto wiki wants to solve once and for all. However this is not an online knowledge base like Wikipedia but just a collaborative platform for writing package descriptions that can be embedded for offline usage in current software packages.

Currently Pakanto already provides a good basis of package descriptions in English and German you can start improving and translating. For example Pakanto already provides for every KDE module a package description. My current aim is to provide decent multilingual package descriptions for all "official" KDE packages until the first beta Release of KDE 4 in order to make the installation of this cool software as easy as possible for every person who even doesn't know about it yet.

So I call for your help in order to achieve that. :-) Just go on edit and improve or translate the package descriptions or start writing new ones in your language of choice - it's a wiki... (see http://pakanto.org/wiki/Category:Packages and http://pakanto.org/wiki/Pakantoescriptions_style_guide) But there are many more things to do. There is plenty of room for pioneers. You are a good coder who is tired of writing yet another text editor and who is searching for inspiration for some deeply desired new software? - Pakanto needs you. You're good at promotion? - Pakanto needs you, too.

So if you are searching for a new cool project that can make Kubuntu even more usable for everyone I'd love to see you in Pakanto.

    Have fun.
