    wireless assistant

I tried the edgy live cd which worked fine untill I installed it; wireless assistant showed my network twice and couldn't connect to anything.

I'm currently using dapper and whenever I use wireless assistant to connect to my network it says "connection failed" but if I click refresh it connects straight away.

Is there an alternative to wireless assistant to connect to a network?

also, is wireless assistant a frontend for something? could I connect from the command line?

I've installed Kwlan but it doesn't seem to have an option to use ath0 instead of eth0 and I've installed KWiFiManager but it doesn't seem to have a function for actually connecting to a network.

Try knetwork manager, it will be replacing kwlassistant as the default wireless network manager in feisty.

And yes it is to some extent a frontend for the command line but I have no idea what the necessary commands are.

Thanks, I've tried it but I don't get any options to actually connect to a network just look at them and get graphs etc.
So far the only way I can get proper functionality out of my network is to install Ubuntu then Kde and use Ubuntu's default (though unpleasant) network management program which doesn't allow me to easily change network.

        Re: wireless assistant

running kwifi and making sure my internet configuration is activated under networking in the control center -sometimes with a bit of trial and error- has always got my wifi up and running, or restarted. Does your wifi show activity if you try sudo ifconfig on the command line? ie, show packages sent and reciieved etc?

I also, particularly in kubuntu, find that my wifi tweaking tends to kick in after a reboot, not immediately after i tweak my configuration, so try a reboot, when you get some sign of network connecivity and an activated wifi card

        good luck

          Re: wireless assistant

I've found that a temporary solution to the problem is to use ubuntu with kde instead of kubuntu and use the default ubuntu network software as it has absolutely no problems. I say temporary for a few reasons: when I come to installing Linux on my laptops This program will be very difficult as it doesn't allow easy network switching and I dont want the hassle of installing Kde in addition to all the other software set up as it's a hefty install. I can't set up the internet connection independantly of my wireless connection as my internet access is via my wireless network.

Is there someone who could give me a hand? My wireless network assistant cannot activate my wireless device, but when I tried to connect via ethernet, everything went just fine. I have an HP Pavillion laptop. On the other hand, I try to find out where can I find an "Update checker" or something like on Ubuntu Systems/Preferences menu is listed. Please, somebody can give me a light on this!! Thank you for your time.
