FPS in HD 4000 vs GT 650M

On this 2012 Acer Aspire V3-771G 17" laptop the primary video is an Intel HD 4000 and the unselectable from BIOS 2ndary video chip is the Nvidia GT 650M.

I ran Glxgears when using the HD 4000 and got 300 frames in 5 seconds, which turned out to be the 60 fps monitor refresh rate.
When I ran Glxgears under the Nvidia-390 driver I got
    :~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
    39901 frames in 5.0 seconds = 7980.131 FPS
    41494 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8297.416 FPS
    43158 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8631.460 FPS
    43480 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8695.853 FPS
    43464 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8692.779 FPS
    43231 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8646.162 FPS
    43124 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8624.707 FPS
    42504 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8500.795 FPS
Obviously the Nvidia frame rate is about 145X that of the HD 4000.
Under the Intel I can't run Steam's Universe Sandbox in a useful way. Under Nivida it is as smooth as silk.
