    Updated and now authorizations seem broken

    I am running KDE Neon 5.19 upgraded from 18.04 to 20.04 about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Everything has been fine. The kernel is 5.4.0-40-generic. Plasma 5.19.4. Qt 5.14.2 Yesterday there were a lot of updates and now I have a lot of problems, but they all seem related to authorizations. If I start KDE partition manager it never scans the drives and not authorization box comes up. If I try to install something via Discover I get “You have no authorization to execute this operation.” Similarly in Muon: “This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided”, but no box came up. Sudo apt update did work. Also, I cannot shut down or restart. I have to power off.

    Any ideas? Is it related to snap?

    How do you perform your regular package maintenance?

      Normally with Muon. I update whatever is available. Yes, I know that is more risky, but I have not had a problem in a few years and I guess I got careless. I have not really kept up with the forums (life happens), but I saw some stuff that made me wonder about snap.

        Open konsole session. Run: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade

          Thanks. Done. All appeared to go well. Also removed several unneeded packages with "sudo apt autoremove" as prompted.

          However, nothing has changed with respect to the original problem.

            Have you checked your home folder for root owned files? Sounds like a problem with PAM if not.

              Checked 14 primary hidden folders, 9 links or folders, 9 hidden files, and 1 file in "Home" with Dolphin (only way I know to check) and all belong to me not root. I did not drill down in folders.

              I don't know what PAM is. I will google.

                Code:
                cd $HOME && find . ! -user $USER -ls
                will recursively find all files in your home (and its subfolders) not owned by you.

                  Thanks for the information, chimak111.

                  Does not appear that there are any.
