    Really liking KDE neon

I had been away from Linux for over a year. I went through a lot last year and did not have a good enough WiFi connection to even download a distro to install. A neighbor let me borrow a USB WiFi adapter and I was back in business! I have since purchased one that seems to work just fine. I love the clean modern look of KDE and how light on resources it is these days. I picked KDE neon for my HP desktop and could not be happier! The iso size was a factor since I am on public WiFi and I added the apps I liked a little at a time. I liked the vanilla install and the few included apps were ones I liked anyway.

I tinkered a little, changed to an alternate menu, changed the task manager to icons only task manager, sped up animation speed a bit, and went with the breeze light theme. It only took minutes to make it my own and it looks really nice! I installed Calligra Office because it just seemed easier at the time. Turns out I really like it! I don't remember it being so good in the past but it sure is nice now! I went with Clementine for music, always thought it was good! I added KTorrent, Muon and UBlock Origin to Firefox. Everything works perfect! I did not realize how much I missed being a Linux user until I did this install!

Previously, I had been using my Chromebook, phone and a newer Windows laptop that does not yet have full Linux support. The phone is small, the Chromebook comes stock with too many annoying ads, and the Windows laptop is a nightmare to update! KDE neon had 108 updates the other day and updated just fine using somewhat slow public WiFi. The KDE integration for Firefox is outstanding too! I get knocked off after an hour and a half or so and the KDE integration notifies me to log on, it's great! I love the look and feel of KDE and I am once again a very happy Linux user!

    Fine choices!
KDE Neon is a great distro
It feels great to be back, doesn't it?

I'm waiting for KDE Neon based on 20.04...
Constant change is here to stay!

They have previews of it, if you're wondering what it's like.

Personally, I'll hang on to the 18.04 base as long as I can :·)

I've been running it in a VM for awile - not daily using it, but just seeing what's up. It's feels very responsive. No snap packages by default - at least so far.

              It's up to Plasma 5.19.80, frameworks 5.73.0, Qt 5.14.2. Kernel still 5.3

I upgraded my laptop to 20.04 on the day Jonathan Riddell announced the testing. A stale apt preferences file did not get removed, causing a few semi-important things to be removed, like the network manager widget as well as some applications.
Other than that, which was a quick fix once discovered, it has been my daily driver. Really, the only difference is the base OS.

Fresh installs seem to work normally.
I have not noticed any packaging issues.

Which is the reason why I'll hang on to the 18 base as long as reasonably possible.
I don't use - nor for the moment plan to - any apps that depend on the 20 base.
I do use - and would like to continue to - some ones that are hell to work with on the new base.
The 5.3 kernels work just fine for me.
                  Plasma is the same...

16.04 went away ~February '19, dunno if it will be similar for 20.04, as 18.04 was the first Neon core upgrade.
Seems a reasonable timeline for planning purposes.

                    However:

                    https://blog.neon.kde.org/index.php/...ial-16-04-eol/

(they only hang around for as long as they did because it took a while to move the Snap builds away from them)
Now, before anyone gets their underwear twisted into multiple bunches, this is in reference to snaps for standalone KDE programs, which are/were using Neon as the base to build them off of. Not as replacements for apt packaging. So calm down, take a breath and relax
This may indicate that 18.04 EOL might possibly come sooner this time around.

Hmmm. I just has the terrifying thought ;·) ... once neon "rebases", we won't have the choice to use one or the other, right?
It just rebases the base :·), and that's all we're going to get...

Oh, well. I'll just deal with it.

You could just not update. But totally goes against the whole point of KDEneon.

If you don't want to rebase, switch to Kubuntu 18.04 and you're good for several more years.
