package neon-adwaita needed?

I needed to install some libraries to get a GOG.com game running on Neon 5.17.4.

One package libgtk2.0-0 forced the removal of neon-adwaita

Is that package critical or is just a cosmetic thing?

From the package description:

This package solely exists to keep the Adwaita icon theme out of the default neon installation. If you would like to use Adwaita simply install adwaita-icon-theme-full. This package will be automatically removed when adwaita is installed.

It's a convenience package that provides "adwaita-icon-theme" (the gnome default icon theme) to satisfy dependencies without actually installing the large icon set. It will get removed if 'adwaita-icon-theme' or 'adwaita-icon-theme-full' packages are marked for installation. However, 'libgtk2.0-0' only depends on 'adwaita-icon-theme' which is provided by 'neon-adwaita' so it should not forcibly remove it. Of course there is a chance that another package that you installed simultaneously actually depends (or recommends, depending on your apt settings) on 'adwaita-icon-theme-full' which would remove 'neon-adwaita'.

It can of course be removed without issues, but you might end up with full adwaita icon theme installed, which might not be strictly necessary (but obviously does no harm either, except for some disk space reserved)
