Neon does not start in GUI mode after fresh install

I got an old laptop from someone, and decided to install Neon on it.
When I boot from USB, everything works fine, I can use the system, I used gparted to make the windows partition smaller and make room for linux.
After installing Neon on the HD, it does not start properly.
The grub menus is ok, I can choose neon or windows (windows still works)
When I choose Neon, first I get the neon logo (black screen with a few circles and text with the neon version) and then a black screen t iwith a mouse pointer that I can move around, and that is all.
When I start in recovery mode and in root prompt type startx, I get the same thing.

It is the same USB stick I used to install Neon on my main PC some time ago, as this install went ok, I should think the install stick was still ok.

To make sure I downloaded and put the latest image on the stick, started the install after removing the ext4 partition.
But now, during the install I get following error: "The grub efi amd64 signed package failed to install into \

Can you give me some tips on how to get Neon installed on this laptop ?

Actually, googling that error message brings up a ton of possible problems/solutions.
Quite a few tons actually... which is a problem, but you could try and maybe get lucky.

One assumes you tried to disable secure boot and attempted legacy mode in BIOS.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but I've never experienced it. :·/

While I'm at it, if you'll allow me to be a bit of an annoying/condescending know-it-all, those "few circles" are a representation of a neon atom, with ten electrons :·)

Thanks a lot for your reply, it made me revisit the BIOS security settings.
Secure boot was disabled, but I discovered a setting called "Erase all secure boot settings"
and apparently that, or creating the USB installer with dd instead of with startup disc creator did the trick.

I also remembered from some years back that there is/was a bug in the startup disc creator, so I recreated the installer USB stick with dd.

The existing W8 also still works, I'll probably hardly ever use it, but you never know.

Some systems with older Radeon HD graphics need to have a boot parameter set in grub. I think the installer is using a different, generic driver, and not the radeon driver.

You can do this temporarily at the grub menu:
Select the Neon entry and hit the 'e' key to edit.

look for the line that has 'quiet spalsh' in it, and add this in front of these 'radeon.modeset=o' It should look like this:

        radeon.modeset=o quiet splash

Hit ctrl-x to boot with this, I think. It tells you what to do at the bottom of the screen, if I have it wrong here.

If that works, then the parameter has to be added to the grub config so it is permanent.
