strange problem on testing with hwe-edge 5.3.0-12 kernel

So I got the 5.3.0-12 kernel a day or 2 ago and just noticed that 1 directory/folder will not show the content.

the folder is dwhelper (named for that extension in firefox ) that I put youtube videos in.

all my other systems see it fine and if I boot the 5.0.0-30 kernel this one dose as well .

the folder is a link (lrwxrwxrwx 1 vinny vinny 27 Mar 19 2016 dwhelper -> /mnt/btrfs/kubuntu/dwhelper) and yes it's on a btrfs file system .

all the rest of the linked folders that point in this direction are fine .

if I "ls" from in that directory I get "input output error"

I thought that maybe I needed the specific linux-tools for the kernel so installed the " linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04-edge" that gave the "linux-tools-5.3.0-12-generic 5.3.0-12.13~18.04.2" but it did not help.

for Kernel Version: you can insert 5.3.0-12-generic when the quirk occurs

what do you all think , other that one should expect such living on the edge ,,,,,LOL

no , I did not do that yet.

but the rest of the directory's that use the <some directory>-> /mnt/btrfs/kubuntu/<some directory>" linking are fine and it(the problem one)displays as empty.

You could just remove the link and recreate it, assuming some ownership snafu with the link.

I do not think that is going to work as the "real" directory exhibits the same snafu , and just wile running the 1 kernel.

You put in, or Firefox does?

I'd be very curious as to the permissions and ownership on the folder and it's contents. If you as the non-root logged in user can't see these, then change to roots shell and see.

OK this reply will be in 2 parts , first the root "ls" you asked for on the 5.3.0-12 kernel , then I will come back and edit the post with the permissions on the content (as it cant be seen on the 5.3.0-12) .

looks like we found 1 more "steam"

back in a few min with the permissions on the content (of dwhelper) but on the 5.0.0-30 kernel (so we can see the content) and edit into this post.

yes , but only on the 5.3.0-12 kernel , and the "dwhelper" directory is showing as good in that "ls -la" output but gives the "

reading directory '.': Input/output error"

error from within it .

all is good with both of them on any other kernel .

There are some fixes for btrfs in the 5.3 kernel. I'm guessing, but it sounds like the 5.3 btrfs is finding something it doesn't like in the file system. A good backup of the data might be urgent, and not a btrfs send/receive one might be a good idea. If the data are not important, recreating the btrfs might be a way forward.

I have no experience with btrfs check, but that might be a next step.

Hummm , this is a 1TB drive that contains ALL my user data , linked to ALL my installs in the fashion as as indicated in posts below.

AND it's to much data to backup to anything else that I have, ,,, oops

OK so dmsg gave me this ,,,

after trying to access the "dwhelper" directory.

I will assume that's the "steam" directory

that led me to hear ,,, https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Tree-checker

so looks to be a bug in the tree checker in 5.2 + Kernels

so staying on an 5.0 one for now .

S.M.A.R.T said the drive is OK and in the 5.0 and 4.15 kernel all is good , for now

cool after reporting the error to the kernel teem a dev emaild me and sead I can probably fix this just by moving the data to a new directory deleting the original and then back to a new directory with the old name .

but asked for a dump first before doing it to make sure .

like

and

btrfs ins dump-tree -b 150186876928 /dev/sdb1

even sead I could edit out the file names , as it would contain some , I said naw no shame to my game . LOL
