    Updates from a couple days ago breaking my system

    My KDEneon 18.04 User Edition install died!

    OK, not really - snapshots are an amazing thing - but something updated day before yesterday is preventing my system from booting (or at least delaying it so long I lose patience).

    What I am experiencing:
    • I updated my system Monday but did not reboot.
    • Yesterday, I updated again late in the afternoon and rebooted and sat staring at a black screen and no drive activity.
    • So I restored that morning's snapshot and rebooted to the same result.
    • Then I restored Monday's snapshot and it booted normally.


    I assumed I had updated during a bad time Monday afternoon or the update had failed or something weird so I waited until this afternoon and updated and rebooted yet again and it broke the install - again.

    Since no one else has complained, I assume it only me. I'm pouring though logs trying to glean the culprit package but I may just start updating in small groups until I break it again to narrow it down. There's 115 updates waiting:

    I'm going to suggest that you not rebooting after the update:

    • I updated my system Monday but did not reboot.


    Might have been the proximate cause of your issue. That you didn't, and subsequently (the next day) also updated your system, and experienced the problem, suggests to me, that something critical, that rebooting would have completed, didn't get finished. Just a thought.
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.

      maybe unrelated to your problem , but 2-3 days ago rebooting after some updates left me staring at a black screen for a bit then some text repeating "USB 3-7 not responding " or something like that , about 4-5 lines of that repeting every 30-60 sec then changing to "USB 3-10 something something" for 3-4 lines ,,,,,then it booted.

      A few minutes all and all , now this was on my Neon testing edition , but the Kubuntu-18.04 did the same thing as well , it has stopped now .

      I opened the system log viewer and filtered for "usb" and saw the same lines I saw during the boot wait , it appeared as though something to do with the usb subsystem was not connecting/configuring for a bit.

        I rebooted no problemo, basically the same update list as you. I have not had any issues at all .

          So went thorough some stuff. It appears to be a grub problem. My grub install is from 18.04 so long in the tooth.

          I did a few stages of package installs with this behavior: Hands off booting resulted in no boot. Editing the boot line and removing "quiet splash" in an attempt to see what was wrong resulted in no textual output but it booted right up. So I'm going to update my grub install and the boot loader and see if the problem goes away.

          Weird thing was, sometimes - not always - if I rebooted from the desktop, it would reboot. But if I rebooted from the log in screen, it wouldn't complete the boot ever. This makes me think they've changed something in the boot splash or grub-update that's incompatible with my old grub installation.

          My desktop has been rebooted more in the last hour and this whole year, LOL

            This morning I edited default/grub and removed the theme (breeze) from it and it rebooted just fine. Still not sure if that fixes it or not, but I noticed the the grub breeze theme was one of the packages updated. I didn't try updating or re-install grub yet, but I still may if this issue persists.

            I do wonder why I don't get a text boot when I remove "quiet splash" during boot.
