    new old laptop

so the other day we (the wife and I)were over at her brother new house having a look and visit.
during the course of helping to unpack things we came across an oldish laptop (acer aspire-V5-431) I asked whats this !
he responds , O a old laptop I found in the shed wile packing things , well me being me of course said , lets check it out.
well it would not boot up no mater what I tried , their were 2 windows boot loader entry's in the F12 boot menu and the hard drive along with the usual USB netboot and such and none of the produced any results ... except the persistent live USB I allways cary with me .
so he said you mess with such things you want it , well you can never have to many test boxes so I took it.
that was this past Saturday , well today I started to redo it .

    I DL'd the Neon-user and dd'd it to a USB , booted it , installed "partitionmanager" then ,,
I redid the drive like this ,,,,,,,

    Code:
    vinny@vinny-Aspire-V5-431:~$ sudo parted -l
    [sudo] password for vinny:
    Model: ATA ST320LT020-9YG14 (scsi)

so far so good with the install and how it's running , their are some hardware problems .
1-I have found 2 key's that do not work , the up and rite arrow keys , they do not work in the BIOS setup as well so their probably dead.
2-not a broken hardware problem but the hardwired network inputand and VGA output are a combind plugin that require a speshal set of plugs ,,,the wireless works however and their is a HDMI output.
3-the batery is completly dead , will not charge

Bringing old laptops back to life is always cool! I have an older Toshiba that I got from my son. Loaded up Mint 18.3 - won't run under Cinnamon but does Mate just fine. Not a speed demon but it can what I ask it to do. It had a 500GB Hybrid drive that didn't like my attempts at Linux. Replaced it with a plain Jane WD 500GB (gave the hybrid back to my son) and Mint installed very quickly. I also played around with Lubuntu and a few other light distros. It has a clear display with no missing pix, but only 4GB. Just the nature of the beast. Still cool.

Older hardware can be a lot of fun! I have Kubuntu 18.04 loaded on an old HP with a core 2 quad @ 2.4 GHz, it is one of my favorite machines.

Don't throw away that old Pentium! IF it has 256Mb of RAM it's good to go with ELive!

sory GG read more next time it has 4GB RAM and is running Neon-user just fine on a BTRFS file system .

just snapshoted @ and @home with @oshunluvr's service menu and am getting ready to do the Bionic upgrade on it

Nice writeup Vinnie -- thanks. Good that you got satisfactory performance with KDE on that old hardware.

On an older Dell Inspiron that fell into my hands, I had good luck with an LXQt desktop. That's an option people can consider if KDE is too much for an old CPU with not much memory.

I knew that. I was just posting on the bottom of this thread in case others might have an ancient Pentium box with low RAM laying around. Perhaps I should have started a new thread, but I didn't think that there would be many low RAM Pentium boxes gathering dust where the electrolyte in the capacitors hadn't leaked or dried out.

LOL ,,,,yes I am surprised it is working as well as it is .

I just finished the Bionic upgrade and it's still going strong , surprisingly even playing a you tube video in full screen it's staying under 1GB RAM usage with the 2 CPU cores sharing out 62% usage back and forth between the 2 ,,,,,and the audio works as well

                gotta like that .

guess I can use @oshunluvrs service menu to delete those snapshots , and the ones the "neon-preview-upgrade" makes taking you to Bionic.

turns out "btrfs-progs" is not installed by default .

making the snapshots worked with the service menu , but deleting did not ? ,,,until I installed btrfs-progs.

That ancient box is still good, then, if for nothing else that browsing and emailing. No games though. mmm... I wonder how many FPS it would give Minecraft 1.12

OK so link me to DL of what you want me to test on it ,,,I did go looking but I am no gamer and all the server, client this version , that version, mods, updates , bla bla have me a bit out of sorts .

so if you want to know if it works on it link me to download and instructions (or tell me what to do) and will be glad to test it out
