    update malfunction

    Hi

I have a 2011 HP Probook, 64 bit, with KDE neon installed. I got it in 2018 with neon already installed. So i have no experience with installing a new distro. Likewise, i have no language (linux, etc) and very little jargon experience. When i went to update it a while back, i simply chose “update all” from the Discover options. The result was i can not get past the log-in page. You enter the password and it loops back to the log-in page. [This is exactly the same result as stated by Ondra1, see forum] .At the time of attempted update, i was running KDE neon 5.26, KDE plasma v. 5.26.3, KDE frameworks 5.99.0, Qt v. 5.15.7. Later, i toggled over to what i call the Terminal page, logged in, and the result was a page full of temporary failures. I would attach it but I don't see an attach symbol. With Ondra1 there was the suggestion to simply install a new distro. But I’m hoping to save some of my old files and, as noted above, i am as incompetent with installing as i am with language. Is help still possible?

From where, if I may ask, only out of curiosity?

This is from late 2022, so over two years 'behind' as well as still being on the previous Ubuntu 22.04 base, which hasn't seen any Plasma updates in quite some time.

The best bet really is to reinstall, unfortunately. Your install is so out of date and no longer supported that the work needed to get up and running, plus an Ubuntu OS upgrade that it really is quicker safer and easier to start over.
However, it is not difficult. Plus, since this is done from a live OS run from a USB stick, you can use that to retrieve any files you want to save.

    items needed:
    • a USB thumb drive for the live installer
    • Ventoy, to install on the USB
    • The current KDE neon ISO image (or any distro of your choice). You simply drag this to the Ventoy folder on the USB thumb drive
    • A very large USB stick or USB backup drive to copy your files from the computer

Hi Thanks for the question and answer. This is somewhere in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. Your advice is pretty convincing. I will research and endeavor to follow thru. Thanks again.
