Cursor has a mind of its own.

I have not been using my Asus laptop for a couple months other than to update Neon or look for a document, etc., that I didn’t have on the new-to-me, Acer. The Acer started giving me lip so I dug out the Asus and all seemed well for a bit. Then I started experiencing two seeming unrelated problems. Firefox started randomly crashing, no warning, no error messages. Also my cursor started going wild, with one of two scenarios. Either it jumps to the top right corner or jumps to the bottom right corner and opens the Applications window. When I try to close open windows or even reboot the machine the cursor jumps all over the place and I don’t have any control.

I tried Pale Moon and realized the problems were related. Pale Moon didn’t crash but out of the blue, the warning about closing multiple tabs would pop up. So the cursor was jumping to the top right corner and actually closing or trying to close open windows, it was just a matter of differ rent settings between Firefox and Pale Moon.

I tried it with a wireless mouse, wired mouse, and the touchpad, battery or plugged in, no change. I rebooted, I did a cold reboot (shut-down and remove the battery for a few minutes) and that seemed to work for a bit but the problem returned. I even booted from a live USB version of Mint and I had problems with my cursor.

    Any suggestions?

Does it matter which USB port your mouse is plugged into?

I suspect that your Asus has a USB hardware problem, which is the only common denominator in your examples. If the mouse works in another USB port then you have a bad port. If the mouse misbehaves in all ports then you probably have a bad component upstream from your EHCI HOST controllers. I.e. Mobo problem.

Sounds like a hardware issue, so if you can get at the RAM, pulling it out, cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser, and reseating it would be something to try. If there's two sticks maybe try running with just one. Cleaning the battery contacts seems worthwhile, but I've never heard of that making a difference.

Clearing dust might be good, but with a laptop caution and care is advised.

It happens even when no mouse is connected and I'm just using the touchpad.

          Does
          xinput
in a Konsole show duplicate mice or pads?
This link is about a Dell, not an Asus, but it has some interesting info.

That looks promising. I'll check it out tomorrow, it seems to be behaving for the time being.

The problem seems to have gone away or is at least in remission. For now I will chalk it up to gremlins.
