Neon suddenly demanding root password (sudo pw)

I updated my Neon install today and suddenly it's demanding my sudo password for routine things like mounting drives and even for 'reboot'.

Is this intentional or a bug? It's kinda annoying.

Well, for what it's worth my fully updated Neon is not doing that. Are you using the regular User Edition or one of the others?

FWIW, all 3 of the popups I got (shown above) are from "PolicyKit1 KDE Agent".

Added: This may be unrelated, but I also just realized my .profile isn't getting processed on boot. If I source it, it's fine, but it's not happening automatically.

My first off-the-cuff thought would be a permissions issue, doing things with root/sudo that shouldn't be run with elevated privileges, which mucks with things.
Check that you are actually in the 'sudo' usergroup - run groups in the terminal.
Are you logged in as your normal user account?

My second one might be an incomplete set of updates, or something failed - how specifically are you doing this?
I'd try sunning sudo apt update and sudo apt full-upgrade and see if there are any warnings or messages there.

I have two fully up to date systems neon systems here, no issues at all, which of course is no help at all.

Thanks. I had a long talk with ChatGPT and it helped me fix the duplicated repo problem.

Also - possibly related - my .profile isn't getting sourced when I log in (logging in via the Plasma GUI). There appears to be nothing wrong or odd with the .profile itself. ChatGPT isn't sure .profile is supposed to get sourced at all when I log in that way (but I think it is - not least because it adds ~/bin to my $PATH successfully. At least it used to before it stopped getting sourced).

It found symptoms/evidence of what's going on, but not a fix. I'll summarize what I learned:

* The pop-ups are all from "PolicyKit 1 KDE Agent"; that seems to be central to the problem. Somehow.

* So I tried to reset the policies to default:

That broke stuff (I couldn't reboot at all - I had to power cycle). When it came back up, the problem was still exactly the same.

For latecomers: I gave up and reinstalled KDE Neon (the LInux distribution). That fixed it. I restored my backed up $HOME folder and the restoral didn't break it, so whatever was causing this isn't in the $HOME folder. You're welcome.

You know, a large percentage of the time re-installation is less troublesome than troubleshooting an unknown entity. I generally like to dig in my heals and try and fix it anyway, if only for the learning experience. Of course, since I use BTRFS I never have to re-install. Only roll-back as far as necessary.
