Thanks for the info. I think I will copy the post to a hard drive so I don't have to look for it. By the way, how do I format the ext hd as root? It's already been formatted, but I can do it again after I copy whatever is on it to another ext hd that I use as backup.

The format operation for btrfs is exactly like any other file system with one exception: a partition table is not needed. Simply re-format the drive or the partition(s) you want to use. You may get a "another file system already exists..." type of error. This is normal and requires the use of the "force" switch -f.

So assuming you USB drive is sdb when you plug it in, and you have a partition table on it, and you're using the first partition, the command line entry is:

sudo mkfs.btrfs -f /dev/sdb1

That's it. It will complete in a few seconds or less because the data structure is created as it's used unlike most other file systems that must pre-prepare the entire file system before use.

Of course, you're free to use the Partition Manager to do this as well.

What oshunluver said, and, with the partition manager you can delete an EXT partition that you want to use, converting it into an unformatted raw partition, which can then be selected and formatted with Btrfs

Great news, and IF I understood the announcement and answers to some questions properly, using the default "sudo apt update & sudo apt full-upgrade" will bring Neon up to 18.04.

Indeed. I make no changes except first I take an ro snapshot. Unless folks are using Btrfs they have no clue how much grief that 30 second exercise avoids.

do-release-upgrade will do it

However, Neon (with some small tweaks from me) are working to make this happen.

That image was from testing where I'd hacked a few things so make the updater think all was good to go.
