    KCrash leads to black screen

A couple days ago I installed KDE Neon User Edition onto a 2008 Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. It ran beautifully.
Yesterday I say an update notice and 400+ packages came down the pipe. I did the update on this Acer V3-771G as well.

While my laptop was updating I started playing with the fully updated Vostro, addding package icons to the desktop. Suddenly the screen went black. I waited and after about 15 seconds the plasmashell5 desktop came back in all its glory. Nothing was lost from the desktop. I returned to my laptop after the update finished and watched a local mp4 video. After it was over I wanted to open another app and clicked on the KGear Application Launcher menu button on the left side of the panel. My display went black, exactly like the Vostro's. After about the same amount of time the desktop relaunched and worked beautifully. No apparent harm.

The Vostro runs the nouveau driver and my V3 is using the NVidia 378 driver.

On my V3 I captured the incident in the .xsession-errors.

    Edit: From the Arch forum:
"You are most likely using a Qt5 platform theme or style plugin which has not been recompiled against the latest version of Qt5. These usually use Qt private headers which means they depend on an exact version of Qt and not just a matching soname."

I do not have "qt5-styleplugins" installed.

So ,,, I had/have a similar problem ,,,,last Saturday after a round of updates I rebooted to a black login with just a cursor .

going to a TTY and using "startx"or "startkde" just got me back to the black screen .

from the TTY I upgraded the Nvidia driver ,,,,no good ,,,then did a "mv" on .config .local and .kde to .local.old and so forth .
then the "startx" worked and got me back to login screen and loged in .

in my haste to try to get all my settings back I again did the "mv" thing BUT forgot to "mv" the new defaults to something else first ,,,so when I did "mv .kde.old .kde" instead of getting back my old .kde ,,,,it was gone .

as of now I can reboot and login as normal and all the programs I have tried so far are working as expected ,,except "system settings" ,,,I can do nothing with system settings>workspace theme>look and feel or desktop theme (the get new themes button is not even their),,,and trying to add program to autostart crashes system settings.

<GROAN>... I wish it had been on one of the BTRFS partitions where I do use @oshunluvr's snapshot service menu for dolphin to make snapshots of the systems installed (Neon-lts & Kubuntu-17.10)

the only errors I could find in loges when it happened was the same one your talking about ,,,,,so why I am posting my tragedy ,,, I was hoping some update mite fix things but not yet .

I think that is what will happen, eventually. In my case all I have to do is be patient for 15 seconds and it will heal itself.
But, the next time it happens I am going to pay careful attention to what is running and try to identify the app this is running with the wrong version number.

so I got tired of waiting for a fix to come down the pipes and started to investigate this further ,,,,,,gosh I am laze this was kinda easy .

first launch "systemsettings5" in a konsole and click workspace theme then desktop theme

          Played with your solution.
Did the copying part. That gave me:
