    nvidia question

Due to a bad video card, I got another one installed today: Nvidia GF108 GeForce GT630. I've read a lot of stories about difficulties with Nvidia, but so far there don't seem to be any problems. Is that because my X-server is using Nouveau? Is there any advantage to disabling Nouveau in order to use the new Nvidia card? I am using a desktop PC with a Kubuntu/Neon hybrid, and i3 processor with 6 gb of RAM.

I have an i7, 6Gb RAM and an NVIDIA GT 650M secondary GPU which cannot be selected from the BIOS. .
I installed nvidia-371 and all the associated programs it brought in. That drivers made my 650M the “primary” GPU and my desktop and every app Ibrun is on the 650M. Minecraft gives me ~500 FPS and shaders gives over 9,700 FPS.
In two years my display hasn’t crashed once.

Nouveau is the open source driver for the Nvidia card ,,,you are using the new card!

their is no truly compelling reason to use an Nvidia driver if you are experiencing no problems with the Nouveau driver .

IF you start having some trouble that seems to be graphics related then use one of the Nvidia drivers you can install from the repos .

One difference I noticed when using Nouveau was my card ran at higher temps. I have a newer card than the old and grey Geek's in this thread ( ) so it uses a sliding power scale and fan speed. I suspect the Nouveau driver wasn't managing that properly. I had actually used the Nouveau driver for a couple months because I lost audio through the Display Port connection. Now that we've had a new nVidia driver and I bumped my kernel up to 4.13 the audio has returned.

Thanks for the answers. I didn't really want to fiddle with something that seems to be working well so far.
