Or at least, kmail/kontact *should* start.
Yes, it sort off starts, but exits with a fatal error, ie "The Email program encountered a fatal error and will terminate now". So it looks like it is being worked on at the moment.

When I get it working, I think I will have to export the Calendar when I add new entries as I currently have the Calendar on Google.

Try restarting akonadi or your desktop session/machine. It starts here if you do.

That certainly enabled me to start Kontact but I get a blank Calendar and an error message on exit "Akonadiserver closed unexpectedly". I used the following to stop and start akondai
        Code:
        akonadictl stop
        akonadictl start

What do the system logs show?

I should probably mention that I am using the neon unstable option. I did try returning to the stable option but I got many package conflicts, so I returned to the unstable option

This article gives suggestions as to how to resolve the "apparmor="DENIED" mysql" problem.

I tried the suggestions in this article and it did not change anything.

                I used the procedure
                Code:
First, here's the quick version of this post: If you want to relocate the data directory in MySQL (in this example, to the [FONT=courier new]/data/[/FONT]directory), and AppArmor is not letting you, add the following two lines to the bottom of [FONT=courier new]/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.sbin.mysqld[/FONT]:[INDENT] /data/ r,
                /data/** rwk, [/INDENT]

...and then reload the AppArmor profiles:[INDENT]
                       [B]service apparmor reload[/B]
                [/INDENT]
I feel the safest approach is to wait for more updates and I hope the comments here help.

It looks like Kontact is starting to become useful. After launching it from a menu, it starts after about a minute. It has all aspects that I use working, ie Calendar, Feeds, Popup Notes and Kontacts.

When I launch it from the command line and then quit, I get the following:

So progress is being made and I expect it will not be long to wait. Before this progress, I was getting Calendar notifications for upcoming events. So I am very glad see the above evidence of progress.

                        After all the recent updates, I now have Kontact starting and all aspects appear to be working. However I cannot add new entries into the Calendar. I get the message that it cannot append the item to the file;

The last time I was able to add an entry was just after the 7th September before Kontact no longer worked. My calendar file is std.ics. If I add an exported icalendar file as a new Calendar it shows nothing.

I am still getting the same error messages on Konsole startup of Kontact.

Is anyone else unable to add entries? If you can, is there anything I can do to fix this problem other than patiently wait for more updates?

In the last 2 weeks there have been some updates to Kontact which have fixed some problems but not the one regarding adding a new event.

A most annoying problem has been fixed. This involved existing events to which I had added say 7 days in advance to be alerted on. I was finding that the alert was happening months before and would constantly be repeated every few minutes. The only way I could get rid of this was to delete the event. I ended up creating a file with the details of all the events that I reluctantly deleted. Thank goodness I no longer have to do this.

I have been waiting patiently for updates to fix the problem of not being able to add new events. If this doesn't happen in the next few days I will file a bug report to try and get some response rather than seeing updates to other packages that are not causing problems for me.

As you know, or should know by now, the KDE neon repository was not intended to be added to an existing Kubuntu installation; it wasn't ever intended to be supported as such. Downloading and installing the KDE neon User or Developer .iso has/was/is the recommended method of running KDE neon.

According to Jonathan Riddell's blog entry of August 15, 2016:

NEON NEWS: FRAMEWORKS 5.25, KONTACT IN DEV EDITIONS, MAUI BASES ON NEON

Things move fast in the land of Neon light.Today KDE Frameworks 5.25 was added to Neon User edition. KDE’s selection of Qt addon libraries gets released every month and this update comes with a bunch of fixes.
Finally Kontact has built in Developer Editions, apologies to those who had a half installed build for a while, you should now be able to install all of KDE PIM and get your e-mail/calendar/notes/feed reader/a load of other bits. Suggestions now taken for what I should add next to Neon builds.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.

You are correct that the approach that I have taken has risks associated with it. What I am wondering about are the problems that I am having with Kontact. Are these related to this approach, if so, does the approach you are suggesting lead to a working Kontact Calendar? Alternately, to get a working Calendar should I reinstall without neon?

BTW, I am now back from my overseas trip of 6 weeks and am ready to try other options.

I have found that my problems with Kontact were because I had a hybrid system. I now have installed neon and all the packages that I need and use.

To get Kontact working on my system, I had to delete the file ~/.local/share/akonadi/db.data. This allows Kontact to start without an akonadi not running error. For Kontact, I had an ics file that I had exported before the problems arose and I found that I could place this file in ~/.local/korganizer. I now have this part up and working as it should. I have added all the missing entries and new events without a problem.

I cannot get my notes.ics file into the Kontact Popup Notes. I have the notes.ics file in .local/share/akonadi_akonotes_resource_4 as well as in .local/share/knotes. It is also in .kde/share/apps/knotes. I have tried configuring using Kontact > Settings > Preferences Knotes to define the Local Notes folder. All to no avail.

I don't use Kmail and just want the notes for reference to solutions to problems and other bits of useful information. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get my notes.ics file into Kontact's Popup Notes?
