Looks like Kontact slipped through the cracks as it has now been removed from my system in the latest updates. I even tired the unstable option for neon but that showed nothing.

It looks like it is still being worked on and I will have to exercise more patience.

It is being worked on. New PIM was only half done by COP yesterday.

Good to know that it is half done. If I knew when it was started, I could then estimate how long I have to wait, as it would be a simple case of maths.

I am not sure if this is not a case of a glass half-full, which to a computer programmer could mean the glass is full-empty. I am looking forward to the next time Kontact slips through the cracks as I will be heading overseas next Friday. I am missing the use of the calendar on my Laptop and I have installed it on a Trusty Tahr computer.

It rarely works that simply, as people are doing it if/when they have the free time, and 'half done' is/was more a turn of phrase than a precise estimate. Even when things technically build, they may then still some fixing up.

There is good progress being made though on the dev-unstable branch, which will then filter down to the others.

When I realized that it was still in a state of development, my options were to either re-install without the neon option or change the stable option for neon to unstable. I chose the latter and so far so good.

I must confess that the developers are somewhat optimistic in that the Info Center shows the following:

When I checked on my installed packages I could only find Plasma Version 5.7.3 and not 5.7.90 as shown in the above graphic. It looks like it will be coming sooner than I expect. At least I now have my "Default Panel" and "Empty Panel" staying where I want it on reboot.

The actual .deb package versioning = latest stable plasma/kde version + version number of base distro + date of upstream git revision

So even for an actual plasma 5.7.90 (beta or pre-release of 5.8, I forget which), the Neon version of the deb files will be

              5.7.3+p16.04+git%date-%time

The whole idea of KDE Neon is to bring new KDE releases and pre-releases to a LTS Ubuntu (currently Xenial) as quickly as possible. The problem with this is that things will break and there will be problems. Also there is no estimated time for something to be published, it will be finished when its finished!

KDE Neon really is aimed at the developer who needs access to the latest libraries and code from KDE, or the impatient expert user who likes new stuff but doesn't mind bug researching and reporting them. I think a lot of end users will become very frustrated by the rate of change and prefer something a bit more stable.

Thanks for the clarification and I can assure you that I am not frustrated by the current rate of change. I rather enjoy seeing it happen.

I look forward to when Kontact can be installed and I am sure you are all doing an excellent job at making all the changes.

What frustrated me was when I booted my Laptop, the default panel and an empty panel with applications were always placed on my external monitor and I then had to move them onto the Laptop screen. With the latest upstable source, they are now always on the Laptop screen. The main outstanding problem is when I use the Nvidia driver instead of the Intel driver, the left external monitor display moves with the cursor.

As I am using the unstable option, I am now getting Kontact updates and it now launches after some delay. At the moment I only get the Popup Notes and when I use the Help > Kontact Introduction > Setup your Accounts, the setup options appears but Kontact vanishes.

I launched Kontact from the command line and I get the following. I am wondering if there is something else I need to do to get the Calendar option in Kontact.

                    Code:
                    :~$ kontact

As Kontact currently has very limited capability, I have found that I can import Kontact ics files into Google Calendar. When Kontact was working, I exported Kontact's calendar into an ics file which is now working well with Google Calendar and I have been able to add additional entries.

I have been currently using the neon unstable option in the hope that Kontact would work. As this has not happened and I am heading off overseas tomorrow for 6 weeks, I will return to the stable option for neon to keep on the safe side.

So, if you need a fully functional Calendar as I do, I would suggest that you give this a go.

After many updates I am now VERY PLEASED to report that I now have all the features that I use in Kontact working perfectly. While traveling overseas, I have decided to stay with the neon unstable option as I find it very stable.

The developers are doing a great job at advancing neon's look and feel. For example, I now have much refined login and logout screens. The logout screen on my system has the background image defocused and darkened to look like this:

Name:	Logout_Screen.png

I should explain that my desktop is organized so that I cycle through an image every 5 minutes. These are selected from a file of my special photos that I have taken over the years.

It's nice how little gifts keep popping up. When I transfered my gmail address book to KMail I happened to add the birthdates of my children, their spouses and grandchildren. I was pleasantly surprised when I got a notification popping up after I logged in this morning reminding me that one grandson has a birthday tomorrow.

I was surprised because I don't use PIM or Kontact. They must be linked through the addressbook?

For me, Kontact is not working again. This first happened about two days ago and I thought I would wait to see it the problem resolved itself. Unfortunately it hasn't even after many updates to Kontact and its related packages. The error that I get when I start it from the command line is shown below
                            Code:

Does anyone else have the problem? If not, is there something that I can do to get my Calendar back?

I don't know if this is related, but I have been noticing a few "oddities" with the widgets. One is, I have to define three desktops to get two and if I add a widget such as an analogue clock on the desktop, there are no movement and setting handles displayed. Also, I have to reduce the default panel height to see all the entries on the RHS. They disappear if I increase the size.

That completes my current observations and I hope I am not the only one on the neon planet with these problems.

                              I can replicate it in a VM. (I don't use kmail/kcontact)

Looks from from a very brief scan to to be due to recent changes in pimcommon libraries/git, and if so you will have to wait for Neon to do builds for the actual PIM applications with the appropriate changes. At the moment that is not happening, as the git repository for KDEPIM has recently been split into separate git repositories and the old one frozen. So until the Neon packaging catches up to build from the new git repos, there are likely to be problems such as this. Neon yesterday (or day before) had an ex OpenSuse KDE packager starting on the packaging for the split, but as they are learning or at least adjusting to debian packaging as they go, not sure on a time scale for packages with fixes.

EDIT: I'm told it should not be long

In fact, should be fixed with an upload just done.

Or at least, kmail/kontact *should* start.
