Be sure to use the proper kernel.

My mobo is an amd athlon. I was using the i386 and i686 kernels of kubuntu. They worked, however one day I noticed the k7 kernel, and decided to give it a shot. Man did I notice the difference. When I resumed the previous session, all the applications were opened by the time the screen had appeared, which is significantly faster than when I had to wait a minute or two using the ix86 kernels. I'm a noob, and I learned that the proper kernel can make a significant performance difference.

Be sure to use the proper kernel.

That is a one reason why I always compile my own kernels. I'm now running on 2.6.13-ck1 :-).

I don't know enough about Linux to build my own kernels. Maybe some day.

          Re:

If you're using a pentium class chip, then yeah, you should use the i686 kernel. If you know how to compile your own, I hear thats the best thing to do, as its completely customized.

sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.12-9-k7 or linux-image-2.6.12-9-k7-smp (if you want to use a smp processor)
              cheers!

                SMP means symmetric multi-processing btw

Quick question, on a centrino laptop should I be using i686? Thanks

Yeah, you want to use i686 for a Pentium-M (Centrino) .

One of the reasons for not resurrecting ancient threads is that they are often out of date. For example, this thread relates to a subject that is now TOTALLY OBSOLETE. As of (K)Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy), everyone running a standard desktop installation on an x86 or x86_64 machine uses the "generic" kernel.

Ran into this over at the ubuntu forums. The command in a terminal is:
                          "sudo aptitude install linux-686"
Since I have an AMD xp processer as well, I experimented with:
                          "sudo aptitude install linux-k7"
                          It worked like a charm!!!
I am now running 2.6.15-27-k7 and the performance increase is VERY noticable.
