I was doing some research on a project I'm working on, and came across some excellent IBM articles on almost all things filesystem:

I haven't had a chance to sift through them all yet, but these certainly seem to contain a wealth of information.

Very good find! The part about tmpfs is especially interesting. Haven't read any farther than that, but I intend to. I now understand what a "jounaling" file system does.

Well, I've finished reading through all of them and have found the articles to be quite interesting. In a short, personal review of the articles: I learned more about tmpfs, learned what exactly devfs was, already knew about reiserfs, learned about the different journaling options with ext3, didn't learn anything new about xfs, and didn't read about evms as I don't deal with the issues it solves. All-in-all, if you would like to become more familiar with Linux's current filesystems, these articles are definitely one place you may want to check as they're chock-full of goodies.

Nice series -- I just now found it -- thanks integr8e!

Interesting that an IBM guy didn't write about JFS -- maybe it wasn't well developed at the time of these articles. I've been running my Kubuntu and also sidux on JFS partitions for some months now, with no apparent adverse effects. I previously had my Kubuntu OS on an XFS partition for about 8 or 9 months, and I began to see an odd slowdown in closing a VMWare Player session that ran a 10GB Win XP machine. As the time required to shut it down went from seconds to minutes to 5 minutes or more, I got nervous and decided I'd better do something else.

I still have several large (250G) data partitions formatted XFS, but that data is not real variable (videos and such), and those filesystems seem to be completely stable.
