Did that (backed it up) and Yep, I really deleted it. It was fairly stable for me until these new packages were released. Had I known there were issues with them I wouldn't have said - " Yes, Update please". That grin went a way fast.

Yep, good idea -- I'm gonna give that a shot tonight. Thanks!
I'll try that again myself and see. Who knows. What is weird is I can see the splash and it automatically pops up a konsole window. No other Plasma thingies and no windows decorations (for apps I can get to run). Some apps work from konsole so I'm able to do a few things, but it's all command line driven. Not very efficient. Oh yes, the keyboard doesn't work in some areas. Like if I open adeptmanager (from konsole), I can't input anything in the Filter field. But the mouse works great !

@Moon, regarding the stripped windows, did you try
      Code:
      kwin --replace
in the Konsole? If that doesn't work, there's a related command --- maybe "kdewin --replace"?

Yep tried that as well. Got the message that it wasn't installed, although I verified it was. Same for plasma.

Pardon my ignorance, but what does kwin do?

Well. I was able to start Kwin. Reconfiguring KDM to KDM-KDE4 didn't do a thing but place the ugly default Login Splash back in place of my custom one. Since I was able to start Kwin and finally move windows around (again everything I want to run must be from konsole), I decided to start Compiz. It works as well, even the cube. What appears to not work is Plasma. Isn't that what controls the Desktop and Panel? This is really ridiculous. I'll leave it like this for a week and see what happens. This truly sucks!

                Yep. I just did:

                1. sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm and chose KDE4

                2. sudo envyng -t and uninstalled the Nvidia driver

                3. installed the Nvidia driver

                4. Rebooted and logged in to KDE4

As far as I can tell, no change. It did auto-start Compiz -- I guess that's something. I have no idea whether it is kdm or kdm-kde4 running the display -- kinda afraid to check ....

Do you know where Plasma is installed? If I knew the path to it, I might be able to get that running. Also, what is the name of the program that displays what services and all are running?

Mah -- I'm on my Eee PC at the moment, sitting on the patio sipping wine and watching the sunset. I'll have to get back to you on Plasma.
                    Code:
                    top
will show you the running processes, or Ksysguard if you want it in GUI.

Thanks! I was also able to verify what version of KDE4.1 I'm running. It does report as Beta2, but boy! did it mess up this time around.

According to Ksysguard, I'm running on kdm. Although there are quite a few KDE4 processes, including kded4 and kdeinit4.

Now, here's something interesting. I came back in to see how tonight's updates ran, and Adept Manager had an "unable to complete" error message for me. So in Konsole I ran sudo apt-get update, and got this:

                        Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:

                         libplasma2: Depends: kdebase-workspace-data (= 4:4.0.83-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa7) but 4:4.0.80-0ubuntu1~hardy1~ppa13 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.
So I did. sudo apt-get -f install produced this:

That's exactly what happened to me.

I sure hope you don't have the same issue.

Well, there's more. Upon restarting the system and running "Fetch" with Adept Manager, the "Dist. Upgrade" light came on, so there were another half-dozen package upgrades showing, including one for "dolphin-kde4". I got all excited and ran the upgrade, and restarted KDE. Matter of fact, I first got out of X and decided to go all out and nuked the ~/.kde4 folder, so I could get a clean start with the new & improved KDE4 stuff.

Upon logging in to KDE4, I saw an interesting new monochrome splash screen while the "trinket parade" ran, and then the clean KDE4 desktop. Compiz started automatically -- that was cool! So I opened Dolphin (KDE4) and right-clicked on the white space, and ....

                            yep ...

                            A Fatal Error Occurred
The application Dolphin (dolphin) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).
Please help us improve the software you use by filing a report at http://bugs.kde.org. Useful details include how to reproduce the error, documents that were loaded, etc.
                            right.

                            And no Alt-F2.

So, I'm putting my apps on the panel again, and pretending I don't need Alt-F2 nor any cutting or pasting events in Dolphin, and I guess we'll see what the coming days bring.

At least it left you with a Panel and a Desktop! I'm limping right now, but I'll survive.

                                Hey guys

My kde4's are running more or less nicely.

The debian and the intrepid versions are the best.
alt+f2 and proper kdesudo commands without the full path and without "command not found".

Having rubbed that in a bit when I read this:
What appears to not work is Plasma. Isn't that what controls the Desktop and Panel?
from moon just now I figured it may be something like this:
Now, here's something interesting. I came back in to see how tonight's updates ran, and Adept Manager had an "unable to complete" error message for me. So in Konsole I ran sudo apt-get update, and got this:
I had something similar yesterday and I think that it had to do with the "fact" that some packages were 4.0.80 some 4.0.82 and some 4.0.83.

To sort the kdesudo issue I did this (idea from rog) a few days ago:

                                Code:
                                sudo mv /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu_original
                                and

                                Code:
                                sudo ln -s /usr/bin/kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu
                                which worked.

For my own reasons I decided to do a clean install of HH remix and upgrade to beta2 this morning.

Got just about the same as you guys. It was eventually fixed (more or less) by doing what dible did.

                                What didn't get fixed was:
my functioning synaptic from yesterday is borked again.
kdesudo does not work as it should and the above linking gives me:
                                "kdesu cannot be found" :P

maybe the path to kdesu has changed? :P

On the up side samba shares are working again

Anyway there seems to be a little bit of work left here and I am still lovin' it
