Well, there were updates after getting back from vacation. Thought I might as well. Everything went fine. Rebooted to test out what may have been fixed in 4.1 Beta (my mistaking thinking that). After logging in all I get is my Splash Back ground with Konsole smack in the middle of the screen with no Window Decos. Nothing Else! I can run individual programs from konsole (how I'm writing this luckily). How can I figure out from Konsole what is not working? If I run Plasma it reports that it doesn't know what it is. Is that it? What do I need to so I Konsole to try and reinstall it if it is.

Is that n HH remix>kde4.1 beta?
Can you get into recovery mode?
If so try deleting / renaming ~.kde4
Could it be your video card?
Edit: can you disable compiz?

Yep HH 8.04 Remix KDE4.1 Beta.
Actually since I get a Konsole right on Logging in, I guess I can try the KDE4 removal from there. I'll report back.
Not the video card, I don't think. Was working until the updates and reboot.
Don't use Compiz by default. I am, however, using KDM instead of KDM-KDE4. I wonder if they are forcing the use of that now with KDE4.1?
Anyway, I'll report back after remove .KDE4.

Nope. No go. Clean .KDE4 directory and still I get is a Window Decoratorless Konsole. Odd enough, native apps will report not install. Konsole, FireFx and Thunderbird will start properly. I can start the others, but only if I go to where they are installed. Seems to be a pathing issue yet again like root, except this time it is the user that is being affected.

I really was getting to like KDE4.1, but, and I know this is Beta, it shouldn't break that severely. A few things yes, but not everything.

Code:sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
Hmmmm......
I had kdm-kde4 installed before upgrading now it is:
kdm-kde4 4.0.3-0ubuntu2
so maybe you van remove kdm and install kdm-kde4?

Re: HELP!!! Broken System - Lost on How to Fix!!! The particulars in the post.
Here kdm-kde4 won't run -- so my KDE 4.1 Beta is running on kdm. I think I might have a similar problem to Moon's -- I think that might be why some items don't work right (Dolphin and Konqueror crash when I do certain things with them). When they release KDE 4.1 next month, I might just reinstall too. Most of my stuff runs just fine (VMware, OOO, FF3, Amarok), so I can wait until they work the bugs out, and then install it again.

Re: HELP!!! Broken System - Lost on How to Fix!!! The particulars in the post.
I installed kde4 and it asked me whether I want kdm3 or kdm4 - so I chose kdm4 for the hell of it. The background might not be as pretty (plain blue screen) but it does its job without complaintOnce your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

When you installed KDE4, did you just select it with Adept Manager, or did you follow this?

Re: HELP!!! Broken System - Lost on How to Fix!!! The particulars in the post.
OK, thanks.
Hmmm, I did what you did, then chose KDE4 for my "session", and never paid much attention to what was running underneath, until last weekend. I was surprised to find that it is is kdm (the 3.5.x version), and also that kdm-kde4 crashes when I try to run it from the console. I haven't had time to investigate the crash log -- it doesn't put up a useful error message when it crashes, but there might be something in the X log. It could be related to the Nvidia proprietary driver -- it tries to run, flashes some noise on the screen, and then dies.
Thanks.

Odd, 'cos whenever you install/mess with a login manager (see what happens when you do a dpkg-reconfigure kdm) it should ask you which version it should run?!?
@ MoonRise
Perhaps you want keep a backup of ~.kde4 until kde4 is sufficiently stable. Having said that, your experience is odd - did you really delete/move ~.kde4?Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ
