    Re-open - KDE4 kmenu change

Looks like I am being forced to change to KDE4 when 8.10 comes out. The reason I dislike Ver.4 right now is the menu. I like a narrow simple menu. Not one that has to breakout, slide in and hide what I am looking for. When I set up the XP machines at work, I always slim down the menu.

How is this done in ver.4. I have played in LiveCDs and virtual windows and can not find a setting for this. For me if this can be solved I will move to ver.4. Better to get use to it now than forced over to it in October.

Thanks for any input or suggestions in this.

IIRC, there is a widget for "old style menu" in your KDE4 widget list, in that funky gold icon at the upper right corner of the screen.

Is it really that simple? I will look into it. Thanks

Yes it is that simple. In fact with todays kubuntu kde4.1 Beta you can toggle between the two at will with a right click on the "K"

Okay - I guess it was not as simple as I thought. I was able to get the old menu, but on the desktop which is not exactly where I wanted it. So after some more investigating I discovered I could add a widget to the taskbar/panel. Yet when I did this it added the old menu style to the right hand side of the panel.

So now I have the new style on the left, and the old style on the right. I can delete the new style, but I can not seem to move the old style over to the left. Nothing seemed to do would allow that to change. Click and drag would not work - right click options would yield nothing - yelling at it in frustration got me nowhere.

I know this is a small thing but, I thought the idea behind the kde4 was customization and ease of use.

          Thanks for the help

            Re: Re-open - KDE4 kmenu change

The KDE4 panel is not well-developed yet, and in fact is not as flexible as the KDE3.5.9 panel, as far as I can tell. I accidentally deleted my taskbar a week ago, and that was quite a lesson in re-building the panel, because of the way icons are added on the right end.

Anyway, if you can stand the drama, you might try FIRST deleting the KDE4 launcher, then adding the KDE3-style launcher widget -- it might add to the left end under than situation -- but I don't promise satisfaction. :P

Thanks - I have been playing with it in a VirtualBox so I do not mess up my laptop. I will try the solution later.

Soapbox time - I missed the whole transition for KDE2 to 3. Whenever I would dip my toe in the Linux pool I use Gnome versions, a preference going back to when it started. But when I decide to jump in and swim or sink, I went with KDE since it had all I needed and looked sleeker.

Were there these many issues with it? I find KDE3 stable, customizable and easy to use. Why abandon it to widgets and gadgets? I realize that it divides energies and resources of the team - opps I guess I answered my own question. Here I am climbing off my soapbox and going home now.

                Sorry my mistake.

You can drag / drop the classical Kmenu right next to the mordern one. (lefthand side)

                Play a bit

Would love to know how to drag and drop. (I know "how" - I mean "how" with this). It would not move. But I will fire up VirtualBox and try right now.

Now I know how the users I deal with everyday feel. I know how to drag-and-drop - it just is not working for me. Not sure why. I am in VirtualBox running off a LiveCD for testing purposes - but that should not matter.

You have to "play" with the "dropping" part. The mouse has to point exactly between your default menu button and the taskbar. It should work.

Still not working. The click and drag just will not work. As soon as I click on the kmenu, the menu breaks out and it will not work. But now I can not even try again in the virtualbox. After the last kernel update, virtual box will not work, and even the virtualbox update will not work.

I think this calls for a reload.

Okay this is interesting. While I was trying to get the VirtualBox to work and was thinking of reloading. I tried the live CD of openSUSE KDE4. The ability to move the traditional menu was no problem, it is even one of the options in the right-click menu. So I loaded the KDE4, rebooted and choose KDE4 at boot, loaded the traditional menu and ........... nothing. No way to move it.

Decided to reload Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE3 in it. Like the traditional menu and the ability to have different wallpapers on each desktop. KDE4 just seems to be too different for my liking. I know that eventually I will have to change - but until 8.10 comes out I will enjoy KDE3.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

That had not been enabled yet.

1.) You have to REMOVE the widget from the panel
2.) open the widgets window with a right click ON THE DESKTOP.
3.) choose the widget you like with left button and drag it to to the panel where you want it.
