    Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Yes, that is the way I did it and it is dead easy:

    Excerpt from here:
    http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.1beta1.php

The updated packages for Kubuntu 8.04 are located in the Kubuntu Member's KDE 4 Personal Package Archive (PPA) repositories. To update to this latest beta release of KDE 4.1, please complete the following:

    1. Add:
    to your /etc/apt/sources.list.
    2. If you already have the kubuntu-kde4-desktop packages installed, simply type:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
and answer the questions in which you are prompted.
I hope this gets you going.

      Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

OK, I did the deed. I'm posting from Firefox 3 in my new Kubuntu 8.04 + KDE4.1 Beta system, installed this morning.

So, (skipping the part about how the *^%# installer set the boot flag on my IDE drive and confused Grub all to hell) it's hanging together, but I've already hit two bits of instability that my prior KDE4.0.3 setup didn't have:

      - no Alt-F2 functionality (as Snowhog sadly discovered)
      - Dolphin crashes when I right-click and choose "properties"

I've got some other stuff to sort out -- lots of configuration items (I'd forgotten how dismal that default black boot screen is), installing VMware Player and my Windows database (I'm going to build a new, smaller virtual disk for it, using qemu), etc. etc. But, Firefox 3 Beta 5 is running and has my 40 bookmarks installed, the Nvidia driver is looking good, the Desktop Effects are installed (but need configuration), so I think I'm going to survive the experience in good shape.

Thanks to Fintan and Rog131 for blazing the trail, and sharing the secrets!

        Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Everything seemed to go well except for this error on a few packages:

        Code:
dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of superkaramba-kde4:
         superkaramba-kde4 depends on libplasma2; however:
         Package libplasma2 is not installed.
However, at the start of the whole process it stated it was to remove libplasma2. Do I need to re-install it to finish out the remaining packages?

          Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Went ahead and rebooted. All seems OK. I still get the error:
          Code:
          KDEInit could not launch '/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate'
After Right Clicking on a text file and opening it in Kate. It opens, and you can work on the file, but no Dolphin or Konqueror file browser windows can be used until Kate is closed (after which I get that error message above) or I wait about 3 minutes for the error message to appear so I can click OK. That's a let down there. Hoped that would go away, but I do know it is only a RC, but still.

OK, Konqueror is broken at the moment but Dolphin works. Limited Alt-F2(pulls up but is very plain and the kdesudo cmd gives same error), but I think I can get by at the moment. Samba works!!!! Finally!!

Hey, this is really good. I actually love the panel look now and the added functionality. I haven't felt this excited over and OS in a long, long, long time!!

              Hey moonrise.

you are doing this from a remix HH?

Did you have superkaramba installed under kde4.0.4 before doing the upgrade?

              I am wondering
              1. because a lot of superkaramba stuff doesn't work due to kross stuff
              2. because 4.1 replaces libplasma1 with libplasma2 and thus screws a few "old" plasmaoids.

              KDEInit could not launch '/usr/lib/kde4/bin/kate'
yeah I get that as well from time to time. I guess kate-kde4 is not quite ready yet. I point those files to kwrite

              Edit:
              @dible:
              - no Alt-F2 functionality (as Snowhog sadly discovered)
              - Dolphin crashes when I right-click and choose "properties"
alt+f2 is somewhere. I use right click desktop "run command" for now.

My dolphin keeps on swimming. Maybe a 64 bit issue?

Good for you. Mine doesn't. Could you PM me your smb.conf for comparision?

May be this (samba) should go onto another thread?

                  Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Yes, Karmaba is screwed up again due to Kross, even though Kross libs are installed. Got Konqueror back. For some reason it didn't install. A lot of Wine items wound up in Lost&Found. At least the menu picked them up this time. Still wish I can make the panel transparent. It might be there. As Dibl said, there's a lot to go though. A lot more of the Screen Savers work now. I still can not get my Splash Screen to work. I might have to figure out how to migrate it over.

This is all from HH KDE4 remix.

                  SMB on it's way.

Wow, you want all and now. Well panel transparency depends on the plasma theme you are using and if you have kwin effects turned on in systemsettings>desktop.
afaik you still cannot set the transparency value.

As for screen saves I never use them so I don't know. and which splash screen are you talking about?

Boot splash, login splash grub splash.

                      Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

I just test it from a KDE3.5.9 aspect, not that it is necessary for the panel, for now . Yes, I think the Oxygen Theme doesn't allow transparency.

Anyway, not the GRUB, Boot or Login Screens, but the Splash that shows you what is starting up Desktop wise and that KDE is ready to go.

This is an excerpt from my SMB file. These are the only parameters I've ever changed all others were defaults, afaik. I can get all the way to the share now, but it still wouldn't show the share contents. I might have a Password/Username problem there. This SMB file was taken from my old install on 3.5.9. The thing is I don't get SMB connect errors now and can actually see Windows shares with it now as well. I included a few lines where I actually had to comment things out before this configuration ever worked on any install that I have.

Possibly. Konqueror (KDE4) has the exact same problem -- crashes on right-click. Konqueror (KDE3.5) work just fine. I'm presently installing Win XP on a new VMware Player setup, with a new 8GB .vmdk disk. It all seems to be working correctly.

After installing EnvyNG from the repo, and using it to install the Nvidia driver, I went ahead and enabled Desktop Effects. It says it is Compiz, but I can't find any "settings" panel for it -- anybody got a clue where that might be?

Sorry dible, can't help on the compiz side. My desktop effects are under systemsettings>desktop>enable effects. Next to that there is a tab with all the effects to choose from.

Bummer -- you must have been a bad boy!

I've got compiz mostly working now. But this KDE4.1 has bugs! Every time I open Dolphin and click on a media icon, I get a "dbus-send needs administrative privileges" error the first time, then it works. But none of the apps will browse to a media device outside of my home directory -- have you guys seen anything like that? In other words, I open Gimp, click "file>open" and try to browse to where I keep the image files, and all it shows is my CD ROM and floppy drive.

EDIT: Oh, man -- now I see what the problem is -- /etc/fstab has only the partitions that I used for installing Kubuntu set to mount. Is it my imagination, or did a Kubuntu installation used to pick up all the hard drives and partitions, not just the one installed on. >

I guess it is the wine you drink during install.
I have never seen kubuntu pick up all the HD / Partitions during install. But then I alway use the manual partitioning bit.

                                Must be good wine
