If you are exclusively on Compiz, then maybe. I'll start Compiz here and see what goes

Yep. Turned on Compiz all seemed fine. Started kwin back and gone. I'll see if I can get it back by logging out and then back in.

        Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

I've got Compiz w/Emerald set to automatically run on bootup, so that may be disabling whatever part of kwin is needed for Alt-F2. Geez, I'd hate to have to choose Compiz OR Alt-F2! :P

          Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

It may be more than that and just coincidence, but I was able to repeatably reproduce the effect using Compiz and Kwin as mentioned. Logging out is hard once that occurs. As I said, Right-Clicking on the Desktop to logout doesn't work and going through the menu takes about 45 seconds to start actually logging out. All odd really.

EDIT: added to my list above. Forgot to mention Keyboard shortcuts don't work and persistent SAMBA issues.

The whole Keyboard Shortcut issue I think is more than one thing and effects different systems differently. Why? I haven't figured it out yet. To me if they get that list I made of problems (and I think it covers just about all the problems everyone else has) fixed by final release (though it may be a Kubuntu issue) it would really rock as an DT.

Well as far as #8. Recent updates today. Now instead of just saying the Folder Does Not Exist. It tries to Authenticate repeatedly. > . if you click Cancel it says Access Denied.

                  Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Here is a little revelation -- at least it was for me. After installing 8.04, I went straight to the KDE 4.1 Beta installation, and my first login was to KDE4.

Today I discovered that the display manager that is actually running is KDM -- not KDM-KDE4! As an experiment, I shut down kdm and attempted to start kdm-kde4 - it was an interesting "light show", but it didn't run.

My login menu says I'm logging into a KDE4 session, but it's running on kdm. I wonder how much of the kde4 flakiness is attributable to this situation, and I wonder when we'll be running kdm-kde4?

                  I'll bet Rog131 knows!

                    Strange -

What is the kdm version ?
Where is it coming from ? PPA repositories or standard repos ?

                    With the Intrepid:

After I installed Kubuntu 8.04 (two weeks ago) I immediately installed KDE 4.1 Beta following this guidance:

                      http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.1beta1.php

And I have been logging in to KDE4 sessions continuously.

But on my system it seems to have more problems than 4.0.3 had. When I had 4.0.3 installed, everything was very solid and reliable. Now I have no Alt-F2, Dolphin and Konqueror crash if I right-click int the white space, Compiz will not auto-start and must be manually started, etc. etc. So I dunno -- I'm wondering if this "KDE 4.1 running on old kdm" is part of my issue. kdm-kde4 is installed but crashes when I attempt to start it manually from the console -- does kdm-kde4 run correctly for others?

                      Thanks!

I don't if that has anything to with kdm-kde4 as I havent used it since a while (2 months).

On another plane. I tried to upgrade to intrepid following rog's how to above from kde 4 remix. Well that worked up to a point. I just could not log in to my user. Just a big black screen. So I used HH kde3 and that worked fine. alt+2, kdesudo kate, etc and num lock work fne. Opening up adept and giving my password does not work. Adept tells my password is wrong. :P

Edit: sudo apt-get install works as well
but t konqueror loves to crash

KDE is trying to use KDE su not kdesudo and needs root password ( FAQ: Root Password ). It is not set => wrong password error.

From the GutsyGibbon/Tribe5/Kubuntu onwards kdesudo should replace KDE Su. But this is not working with the Intrepid Ibex pre-alpha.

Thankx rog. I followed your how to for intrepid and had the same issue as Fintan

                            I did:
                            Code:
                            sudo passwd root
and adept will open but crashed immediately again

                            Another thing:
Klipper was not installed so I went and installed with ap-get install and it also installed synaptic as well.

I usually use synaptic and it works again in kde4 but why does klipper want it?

Also how can I get klipper to start automatically without putting it in ~ .autostart like I had to do on my HH kde4.1 beta?
I need klipper in my systray.

Edit: I did todays update with synaptic and everything seems good

I did notice the HP status icon in the systray. Lo and behold it noticed my printer and it is ready to go. This is hot

More of the kdesu / kdesudo

                              There is /usr/bin/kdesu
                              Code:

But there is also another kdesu:
                              Code:
                              ls -l /usr/lib/kde4/libexec/kdesu

                                I don't want to use /.kde4/autostart :P

I am getting the same from both kde4.1 beta (HH and II) and it is a big :P

Have not solved that one yet.

As for the kdesudo issue thank you for that one

The question remains (at least for me) why kde4.1 beta for II is so much different from the 4.1 beta for HH (or debian for that matter . at least for this issue

                                Edit:
                                after todays update (interpid):
                                no kdesudo kate (konqueror, systemsettings,etc)
                                kdesudo /usr/lib/kde4/bin/systemsettings

                                or

                                kdesudo /usr/bin/systemsettings

                                don't work either.

I also noticed that the little error "could not start /user/bin/kate" still pops up and that moving apps to favorites and / or panel loses the icons (again)

Kate still doesn't have a working "open previous"

                                will keep on playing

                                Edit2:
not only does klipper not show up / start, nor does knetworkmanager (installed)
Samba still does not show the files in a share folder :P

                                Edit 3:
Today (24.06.08) I did a version update to 4.0.82 on my debian test kde4.1 install and a few little things have changed for the better. Panel / systray look, theme / style, "runkommand" looks very sexy although it doesn't show the app when trying kdesudo kate (etc) it works fine.

Klipper shows up in the systray and kmix starts with the channel view on the desktop on log in.

Putting apps. in favorites / panel loses the icon still / again :P

Overall it seems more responsive and a tweak faster.

I'll have to play some more though
