    Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

    Alt-F2 works fine for me.

The only error I got was when trying to resize the panel it crashed Plasma.. but it restarted right away. Said something about a fatal error..

      Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Well I thought I'd switch to KDM-KDE4 and remove KDM. Hoped it would solve some issues. It didn't and causes more problems. First, my "personal" Logon Menu. I was able to start SystemManager in "Admin" mode. Got it to select My theme (After Finding where they are stored for KDE4). When it boots to that, all appears fine, but the User List does not appear at all. Even the Logon Button and System Options button does not show. So that is lacking still. Second, when trying to Log Off once in the Desktop, or even shutting down, I get a corrupted screen except for the Shut Down Options Menu. All other previous findings are the same, so KDM-KDE4 doesn't help.

        which directory did you use?

          Code:
          /usr/lib/kde4/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/
I used that one because they had a Theme called circles in the allowable list of Themes which doesn't show up when using KDM. I searched for circles and that is the directory it appeared in. Once I put my Theme there, it showed up in the list. So I'm certain that is where it goes.

Just so many "short comings". Same for Samba. It doesn't give errors any more for Linux shares until you actually try to view the contents of a share. I can get to M$ share contents OK. But that is at least progress from where I was with Samba last week.

The panel issue with changing Screen Resolution is also quite cumbersome.

Still testing. All in all, I do believe that KDE4 is going to be one Heck of an OS. Hope some of the Kubuntu Developers read this particular portion of the forum.

            Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

Discovered a helpful method with KDE4.1. As I've said previous, I can not get Kubuntu to start at the resolution I want, even though I've set it through System Settings (since the install of HH KDE4 Remix). Once logged in I use System Settings to change the resolution. Up until I installed 4.1 there was never a problem with the panel disappearing. With KDE4.1 it disappears. I've been having to log out and then back in. Easy? Well, some times the plasma crashes and I can't get it to restart because it keeps crashing. What I have found to help (since you can't get the Logout Menu in any way) is that if you Alt-F2 and type in logout, it will let you from there. I don't know if it has always been like that, but that is really nice!!

This is kinda weird -- looks like a bug.

Booted into KDE 4.1 Beta. Ran Adept Updater, ran my VMware Player VM for awhile checking out a media player/web site issue, and happened to notice on gkrellm that one of my CPU cores was pegged at 100%. Hmmmmmmm.

Opened top to see what was going on. Process "kdesu" is using 100% of a CPU core! WTF? I killed it. But I've never heard of a process "kdesu" sucking CPU resources -- it's just a command prefix to invoke the root privilege, right?

                Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

AFAIK. It sounds as though it was trying to run another app at that level and that app didn't quite get started. At which point it would look like kdesu was running like that when actually kdesu was waiting for that app and that app wasn't responding.

I've also found another issue with 4.1. 4.0.4 would at least turn my monitor off after so many minutes when the Desktop was locked. Doesn't do that anymore. Screen saver is on yes, but after a while I like for it shut the monitor off. No more and can't find where that setting would be. Not under display anymore. In fact, display is drastically different from 4.0.4.

Well, there were a few updates to some 4.1 components. No noticeable improvements and now I can't Lock the session out by any means available. >

EDIT: Well, just found that no Keyboard Shortcuts work now. None, not even Ctrl-Esc (and now Alt-F2 as everyone else). What gives!!! It was and now it isn't.

                      Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

OK. HH KDE4.1 Final Opinion. This rocks!! After a few more updates to other components all seems to have settled out. I have almost 98% control of what I had under KDE3.5.9. I can truly say I'm very productive with it. There are still minor annoyances left that I'll list below. All and all, the look, feel, and flow are very nice and modern. I know a lot of folks have criticized the new Menu, but I gave it a try by dumping the old style completely. The new menu appears no more clicking than the other and actually minimizes the number of submenus that appear when going through the tree. IMHO. Anyway, I can't wait until final release. I'm sure it will be that more stable than it is now. Have had very few crashes and most were done by me testing trying to find work arounds for the minor annoyances.

                      1. Alt-F2 - Works as normal user, but trying to use KDESUDO still bombs due to pathing issues for root.
                      2. Login Splash still doesn't work very well and had to back it from KDM-KDE4 to KDM to have a nice Login Splash.
                      3. No matter what I do, the Desktop Loading Splash still doesn't allow modifications from Default/Default Full Screen.
                      4. Still can't get the system to boot with the resolution I want. Have a work around that helps though. I also fixed my issue
of knetwrokmanager not wanting to go to tray. I added "sleep 30s &&" to the beginning of the execution line (autostart
                      file).
                      5. Auto Off on Monitor does not work no matter what is set.
                      6. On some systems when booting the opening Kubuntu loading Splash does not show. On other systems it does for
booting but not for shut down. (hadn't figured that one out).
                      7. SuperKaramba still has issues. Using GKRELLM and LUNA widget as a work around (kind of like it as is now anyway)
                      8. SAMBA issues still exist between Linux machines. At least I can now see the actual share, I still can't get to the
                      contents of that share.
                      9. Other than Ctrl-Esc and Alt-F2, that is about the extent to which Keyboard shortcuts work, no others do.

I didn't really do anything, it just works. Alt-F2 and type "kate" and it launches. Also found that if I type "reboot" or "logout" I can do that from there as well (neat). I can say in initial testings after some updates it quit working and oddly seemed tied to kwin. It (kwin) actually crashed at one point, had no window decos at all. Even Right Clicking on the Desktop wouldn't run the Logout function. Once I restarted kwin (can't remember how I got to konsole, sorry and of course I had to log out at that point because when I stopped konsole, kwin would exit as well), the Alt-F2 started working again and so far so good, especially after the last updates that went through. Other than Ctrl-Esc, that is about the extent to which Keyboard shortcuts work, no others do (forgot to list that). Can't even define new ones
