    Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

    Well so far the unusual for me is the panel. The system still won't let me pick a startup resolution (in other words once it gets to the login splash, it should be at the resolution I want). Once to my desktop and change the resolution to what I want (and want permanent through out), the panel vanishes. Can't get it back, and when I do plasma crashes and won't restart at all, crashes every time I try.

      Well, it's time to start on the wine, then!

      I thought when you set the partitions with the installer (/dev/sdc1, dev/sdc2, etc) that they were then mounted accordingly. Well, senility is setting in, I guess. I've got it working more or less now -- I sure miss Alt-F2, though.

        and the salmon lemonjuice sandwiches

        alt-f2 hmmm.... I am in my HH come debian 4.1 now and alt-f2 works (so does kdesudo kate, deffinately a kubuntu thing > )

        any way have a look at system settings and go to keyboard>short cuts.
        there should be a drop down menu with different choices. Find something like desktop commands> run command. If it does not have alt-f2 assigned yet click on it and assigning the default (alt-f2) see if that works.

        Extra:
        For those who like to experiment and want to change the height of the panel.
        This feature disappeared somewhere between alpha and beta.
        Here goes:
        open:
        ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc

        now edit all the containers that look something like this:

        [Containments][2][Applets][10]
        geometry=46,2,427,56
        immutability=1
        plugin=tasks
        zvalue=0

        to look like:

        [Containments][2][Applets][10]
        geometry=46,2,427,42 (42 is a good size unless you want it reaally smaaaall)
        immutability=1
        plugin=tasks
        zvalue=0

        then set the max and min size accordingly:

        [Containments][2][Configuration]
        maximumSize=1202,45
        minimumSize=1202,40

        Hope this helps you tweakers

        Note: You must do this in recovery mode or change to a different shell as you cannot edit this file correctly as user!!

          Speaking of

          .

          Tried that to reassign my short cut sequence to Lock a Session. It does not keep my settings, and what they have doesn't appear to work. Very few of those seem to work.

            I thought as much.

            The debian version is definitely less "buggy"

            Edit:
            Having said that my debian is "on top" of HH kde3.5.9 so it might have inthereted a few things like alt-F2 from there. I don't know.
            I do know it works on my opensuse 11 RC1 Kde4.04 /4.1 hybrid.

            So maybe it is a kubuntu "bug".

              Mehhh -- Alt-F2 already shows as "run command" in the System Settings Keyboard Shortcuts. Something's not quite right here ...

                Are we all having fun yet!!

                Seriously though, there are quite a few things I like going here, there are these few "idiosyncrasies" going here that are a "bother". I kind of miss my Win-L shortcut to Lock my session though.

                  Neat new Widget with this. Called "Luna". Similar to what gkrellm. Using it now. Removed the one from gkrellm.

                    Hmm...may be we should look for the keyboard shortcut config file? Never did that before because I didn't need to

                    Edit: Hey moonrise. I am still waiting for the smb.conf

                          Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

                          OK, 24 hours of messing with it -- here's the high points, FWIW:

                          - no Alt-F2 to run commands (don't bother fiddling with KDE Keyboard settings, it won't work)
                          - Dolphin and Konqueror both crash if you right-click on whitespace in an open window
                          - Compiz works great, but Emerald doesn't -- no themes available.
                          - at one point in my struggle, I discovered TWO ".kde4" hidden files in my home directory. I nuked 'em both, and things got considerably better afterward.

                          I discovered the "Kate Session" widget, which I parked on the panel, and that largely compensates for the missing Alt-F2, which I was very accustomed to using to start my Kate sessions. Unfortunately the applet doesn't appear to support a "kdesu kate" session, so that's still an annoyance.

                          I did a completely new VMware Player 2.0.4 installation, with a new VM virtual disk, and got Win XP and my genealogy database installed and running really well. This was my motivation to redo the Kubuntu installation, because it appeared that the XFS filesystem that I was previously using was having increasing problems with the big 10GB virtual disk, and I didn't want to wait until it died. The new system is on ext3. Here's a screenshot:

                            Hmm. Okay, yes, it is beta so ....

                            So far, my running of HH w/KDE 4.0.5 is a pleasant experience. Issues do exist, but the basic running (w/Compiz) is good. With Fintan's help, I got kmenuedit installed, so I can play around with the K Menu entries. Also, his directions for accessing Kate as sudo so I can edit root owned files works great. With kmenuedit, I added entries for Kate and System Settings set to run 'as root' which eliminates the need to start either with Alt+F2 using kdesudo /usr/libkde4/bin/application
                            Windows no longer obstructs my view.
                            Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

                              That sounds like a very good idea --- I think I'll look up Fintan's excellent guidance! Thanks!

                                The only major problems I have are:

                                1. When Changing Screen resolution upon log-in, Panel Disappears and does not reappear until logging out and back in. At which time KNETWORKMANAGER will not stay in the tray. Stays open as a window.

                                2. Keyboard Shortcuts do not work.

                                3. Alt-F2 does not work. Have My work arounds on that though.
