    Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

    and did a:
    sudo apt-get update / sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.
    Ouch !

There are lot of packages in the Debian unstable/experimental. I think that apt is trying to solve problem that it can't solve: How to change stable (?) Kubuntu to unstable/experimental Debian.

My startpoint was the Hardy Heron with the KDE 3.5.9. and i did use the Synaptic package manager, Synaptic has version info search !:
    #1 Update package database
#2 Search packages with the version info: 4.0.80 (KDE 4.1 beta 1)
#3 Upgrade only those packages and depending packages
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

      Yeah I know.

My second try didn't ruin everything but it refuses to install kdeeject.

      Edit:
I just tried from my HH kde3.5.9 Test. I uninstalled everything kde4. And followed your instuctions by searching for version: 4.0.80 in synaptic and did those upgrades.

      still got that kdeeject error.

      What am I missing?

        Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

        About KDE 3.5 / KDE 4.0 / KDE 4.1

        - KDE 4.0 will install packages to /usr/lib/kde4 and can be installed alongside existing KDE 3.5.

        - KDE 4.1 installation will replace KDE 3.5 installation. (this with the Debian packages, maybe with the Kubuntu packages you can have both ?)

        - KDE 4.0 packages have been renamed; KDE 4.0 has "Package kdebase-kde4" but KDE 3.5 and KDE 4.1 simply have "Package kdebase".

          I understand that part.

What am I missing with the kdeeject error though?
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/kdeeject_4%3a3.5.9.dfsg.1-2_all.deb: Versuche, »/usr/bin/kdeeject« zu überschreiben, welches auch in Paket kdesktop ist
As I mentioned on my HH kde3/kde4 test (not remix) I still get that error.
it is trying to replace / overwrite /usr/bin/kdeeject

Is it a residual kde4 package? if so how can I get rid of it? I can't find it any where when I turn off the debian repos.

Edit: I did find /usr/bin/kdeeject. I am in a good mood and will just try deleting it and see what happens

Edit2: I tried on a virgin HH kde3 install. No kdeeject in /usr/bin. Did the upgrade as described and get the same error again.

Synaptic tells me that these packages need repairing:
          kde-bse-kio-plugins
          konqueror-nsplugins

          any suggestions welcome

              Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

              Hi rog,
well as I said at the very beginning. I was lazy.
I didn't do an install / compile of kde4.1 alpha.

              What I did was this:
I reinstalled a HH kde3.5.9, updated to today.
Added the debian repos did a refresh from synaptic and did a version search for:
              4.0.80

              Choose:
              kdebase-bin for upgrade
which gave me a lot uf upgrades:

              This is my history:
              Die folgenden Pakete wurden entfernt:
              kcontrol
              kde-systemsettings

              konq-plugins
              konqueror
              kubuntu-desktop
              strigi-applet

              Die folgenden Pakete wurden aktualisiert:

Do you have base/core/meta packages ?

kdebase, core applications for the KDE 4 desktop.
                kdebase-workspace, a basic KDE 4 desktop installation.
                kdemultimedia, metapackage includes multimedia applications.
                kdenetwork, metapackage includes networking applications.
                kdeutils, metapackage includes general-purpose utilities.
                kdegraphics, metapackage includes graphics applications.
kdepimlibs5, core libraries for KDE PIM 4 applications
or do you error messages, when you try to install these ?

                  Thankx Rog that did it.

Wow, this is sweet a lot to play with.

My mistake was to update all the packages marked as updateable in synaptic.

I have a few issues with "moving" apps to the panel.
Some apps like synapic and swiftfox go to the panel but without the icon and are not "startable".

                  Edit:
I can't resize the panel verticaly (height) and I have yet to get kdm working but I have time.

                  Oh well thank you again

It seems that this is known problem: Hands on: Plasma continues to advance in KDE 4.1 beta 1
Although the new system makes it easy to change the panel's width and position, I couldn't figure out how to get it to adjust the panel's height—a task that was relatively easy with the last prerelease that I tested. This is a regression that will likely be fixed before the final release.

                    Note !
If you try "Plasma activities"; zoom out > Add Activity...
There is no "Remove Activity" button, well i can't find it . Editing/removing/renaming ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc did reset desktop to the normal.

Yes I supposed as much. Probably the same with moving panel elements.

Zoom out? No thanks. At least not for now.

I still can't get those panel icons to shoe up correctly.
Below is a snapshot of what I mean:

As you can see below all the icons for synaptic, Swiftfox and Firefox are just unactive links or something.

Are you having the same problem?

                      On another note.
I got kdm running but it only like "circles" which isn't exactly beautiful but works.
I have tried a few, but they don't "parse". At least not for me.

                      -Completely remove kdm
                      -Install kdm, kdmtheme, kde-kdm-themes.
make sure they are the debian version.

I couldn't get kdmtheme to run so:

                      -edit: /etc/default/kdm.d/20_default-settings to:
                      USETHEME="true"
                      THEME="/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/circles"
                      I hope this is helpful

There has been changes in the .desktop files and where they are:

KDE 4.1 is keeping .desktop files in the /usr/share/applications/... . Native KDE4 application .desktop files are in the /usr/share/applications/kde4. KDE 3.5 application .desktop files are in the /usr/share/applications/kde. And non-KDE application .desktop files are in the /usr/share/applications.

Users plasma settings are kept in the ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc. There are URL links to the .desktop files.

                        For Firefox-2 there should be:
                        Code:
                        Url=file:///usr/share/applications/firefox-2.desktop
                        but if there is:
                        Code:
                        Url=kde/firefox-2.desktop
you will get "unactive links or something."

                        Note !
You can't edit plasma-appletsrc when plasma is on. KDE is saving plasma settings in the plasma-appletsrc when you log out. => log out, edit plasma-appletsrc, log in and:

                          Re: KDE 4.1 - Now

                          Thankx Rog

I'll look into that when I get finished with playing with kubuntu 4.1.

                          One thing I have noticed:
I don't have the icon problem but some of my favorite plasma widgets are missing:
                          file viewer and notes

This is due to libplasma 2
                          extragear-plasma wants libplasma1

I suppose we will be getting those and more like lancelot back soon.

                          Cheers

How's it working. Just saw on Kubuntu that the RC packages are now out. I'm a going to install them tonight.

                              Hey moonrise.

It is looking pretty good. Actually very nice. There still are a few bugs and stuff like kdesudo, probably due to the fact that I upgraded from kde4 remix, but over all it looks great.

My install is the KDE4 Remix. Those packages just released for KDE4.1 RC...Will it work on KDE4 Remix?
