Of course it is. It's possible to screw up anything if you try hard enough, especially, if you don't know what you're doing, but it's not likely if you follow Patrick's instructions and stick with official repositories.
I suggest looking at man pages (e.g in a konsole type "man wget", then "man apt-key", etc.), browsing The Community Help Wiki, and following these forums, in order to get up to speed quickly.
Is it possible that I'll lose date, screw windows/linux, etc. etc. with updating?
