When one tries to connect to google chat, something happens which may throw people "off".
One sees a kind of coloured "V" and the letters XMPP. That is just the "protocol" for video and voice chat.
The connection to google chat is simple but there are a couple of "blanks to fill in" that folks may not know what should be in them.
Basic tab:
Username: the gmail account name without "gmail.com.
The domain box will fill itself in automatically.
Resource is blank
Password: the gmail password. I ticked "remember password" so things could fiddle around.
Advanced tab:
connection security "require encryption"
tsllow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams SHOULD BE TICKED
connect port(for me) is 5222
This is the little known part:
For the Connect server window enter the following:
talk.google.com
File transfer protocol will already be filled in with: [roxy.eu.jabber.org
The proxy has "use globalproxysettings"
video does not have "use silence supression" ticked.
DO NOT...tick "create this new account on the server."
Hope this helps a little.
